6A first round
Fremont 60, Jordan 51
Dakota Argyle had 21 points and a trio of 3-pointers and David Calvert had 16 points as the Silverwolves beat the Beetdiggers. Jordan did a good job of hanging around in the fourth quarter, forcing the teams to combine to score 46 points over the final eight minutes, but in the end it wasn’t enough. Fremont will play American Fork in the second round of the playoffs.
Roy 60, Kearns 59
Easton Bitton buried a jumper just inside the 3-point line as time expired as visiting Roy pulled off the 6A first round upset at Kearns. Roy was led by the three-headed monster of Kobe Schriver, Mason Thueson and Bitton. Schriver hit six 3-pointers while Thueson and Bitton scored all 35 of their combined points inside the arc. Kearns had take a lead with a made free throw with four seconds left, but Bitton took the ensuring inbounds pass and ran the length of the court and got a shot off before the final horn.
West Jordan 49, Taylorsville 46
West Jordan outlasted the Warriors and earned the right to take on the top seeded Westlake Thunder on Friday night. The Jaguars started out each half strong, which let them overcome a rough second quarter. Logan Prince and Esafe Taufahema combined to score 38 points for the Jaguars. Prince hit four 3-pointers and Taufahema scored all his points inside the arc to keep the attack balanced.
Lone Peak 80, Northridge 59
Lone Peak was able to build a 31-point lead through three quarters on their way a playoff win. The Knights came into the game as the highest seeded team to not get a bye and now will get to travel to Copper Hills for a chance to make the quarterfinals.
Weber 76, Hunter 43
Weber took down Hunter by using a 23-9 first quarter run to take the lead and never looking back. The Warriors were led by a balanced attack as five different players finished in double-figures. Weber will travel to take on Pleasant Grove in the next round of the state tournament.
Layton 71, West 53
Layton’s offense exploded for 41 second half points in their first round win over the Panthers, but the real success came in the second period when their defense allowed just six points. Ethan Potter had 29 points in the win. The Lancers move onto face Davis in a battle of the top two teams in Region 1. Both teams won the road matchup in their season series, including Layton’s 54-51 win on Jan. 22.
Herriman 46, Riverton 43
No. 19 seed Herriman found itself in a 15-3 hole after the first quarter, but it managed to dig out of it against No. 14 seed Riverton to clinch the 6A first round upset. Bodi Nageli led the way for Herriman with 16 points, with Brodie Newman chipping in with 13.
Syracuse 62, Cyprus 55
The 22-seeded Titans from Syracuse pulled off the upset over Cyprus behind an offensively dominant fourth quarter where they scored 25 points. Ethan Ramirez had 17 points while Connor Saunders pitched in a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Syracuse booked their ticket to Skyridge in the next round of the state tournament.
5A first round
Payson 78, Park City 49
Payson took down the Miners in a dominating fashion to earn their spot in the second round of the playoffs. The Lions will get to host another playoff game on Friday night when they take on Alta. Samuel Mitchell led all scorers with 28 points while knocking down six 3-pointers.
Farmington 78, Spanish Fork 57
Farmington took care of business as the highest seeded team to not get a first round bye with their win over Spanish Fork. Collin Chandler’s 23 points led all scorers and Zach Argyle put in 22 points in the loss. Farmington will host Highland on Friday night and with a win would get to host a quarterfinal game next week.
Highland 46, Provo 44
Highland was able to pull off the upset in a close game thanks to the clutch play of Jacob Solvason and Ammon Kaufusi. The Rams also used a 15-9 second quarter to gain the lead. Highland will travel to play Farmington on Friday night.
Maple Mountain 56, Sprinville 54
Maple Mountain held on for a two-point win over Springville in a tight 5A first round matchup between region foes. The Golden Eagles trailed by three points heading into the final period but were able to rally. Cooper Littledike had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the way.
Mountain View 63, Box Elder 47
Mountain View won the outside quarters by a combined score 44-22 which led to an easy win over the Bees. A big part of the Bruins win was their free-throw advantage, they shot 78% on 23 attempts compared to just 22% on nine attempts for Box Elder. Mountain View will host a second round game on Friday night.
Salem Hills 67, Woods Cross 58
Despite trailing by 11 points at halftime, Salem Hills was able to leave Woods Cross with a nine point upset win. The SkyHawks outscored the Wildcats by 15 points in the third quarter and then pushed their second half total to 53 points with a monster final period. Salem Hills will look to pull off another road upset when they take on top seeded Timpview on Friday.
Alta 59, Murray 47
Alta won every quarter on their way to a win by a dozen points. Jaden Brownell had 28 points and a pair of 3-pointers and Jett Lundberg added 13 in the win. Alta will visit Payson on Friday night in the second round.
Mountain Ridge 56, Cottonwood 39
After taking a three point lead into the break, Mountain Ridge came out on fire and outscored the Colts 35-21 in the second half to pick up the win. Zach Farmer had 14 points while Jackson Moller and Merrick Sherwood each contributed double-figures as well. The Sentinels will take on the second seeded Olympus Titans on Friday night.
Orem 60, Bountiful 58
Orem was able to upset Bountiful in the No. 10 vs. No. 23 matchup thanks to a strong rally in the fourth quarter. They were trailing 46-40 but were able to score 20 points in the final period. Lance Reynolds and Aisake Toiaivao each contributed 17 points.
Brighton 77, Skyline 54
Brighton beat Skyline by 23 points despite being outscored by double-digits in the second period. The trailed by one at the break because of those struggles but a 50 point second half left no questions about the if the Bengals would move on. Brighton will get to take on Orem in the second round of the playoffs.
Viewmont 46, Wasatch 37
Radek Pulsipher scored 13 points, with John Barnes adding 11 and Scott Noel chipping in with 10 as Viewmont scrapped out a low-scoring, defensive 5A first round win over visiting Wasatch. In a game that was tied early in the fourth quarter, Viewmont pulled away with an 8-0 run. Garrett Windsor scored 14 points in the loss for the Wasps.
Bonneville 64, Hillcrest 53
Hillcrest was up to build a three point lead after the first quarter and did a good job speeding up the game in the fourth quarter as the teams combined for 44 points in the final period. However, it wasn’t enough as the Lakers outscored the Huskies 33-15 in the middle periods to pick up the victory.
Timpanogos 55, East 41
Timpanogos slowly built there lead in the first half but then a 14-5 third quarter run followed by another small victory in the fourth let the Timberwovles pick up the playoff win. Jackson Holcombe led all scorers with 16 points, all of which came inside the arc.
