The Rose Bowl was capped off by a 19-yard field goal with nine seconds left, but it took record performances from quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba for No. 7 Ohio State to beat No. 10 Utah, 48-45. Stroud passed for 573 yards and six touchdowns, while Smith-Njigba caught 15 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns.

TORONTO (AP) — It looked like bubble hockey again in Toronto, as the Maple Leafs crushed the Ottawa Senators 6-0 in front of a mostly empty arena. The Ontario government announced Thursday that attendance at indoor events, including arenas, would be capped at 1,000 spectators because of COVID-19.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell is forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Howell’s decision was not surprising, but he made it official with a video posted on North Carolina football’s official Twitter account. The 6-foot-1, 220 pound junior is considered a potential first-round draft pick.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Four-time Olympian Hilary Knight is one of 15 players with prior Winter Games experience on the U.S. women’s team seeking to defend its gold medal next month. Knight joins Jenny Potter, Angela Ruggiero and Julie Chu as the only American women to make four Olympic hockey teams. Brianna Decker, Kendall Coyne Schofield, Amanda Kessel and Lee Stecklein were all named to their third Olympic team.

REDDICK, Fla. (AP) — Billy Turner, the Triple Crown-winning trainer of Seattle Slew has died at 81. Turner trained Seattle Slew to an undefeated season in 1977. Turner’s wife, Pat, says he died at his home in Florida, where he had been in hospice care after battling prostate cancer for two years.
