The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence is set to direct the live-action BioShock film, while Logan writer Michael Green will pen the script.

The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence and Logan writer Michael Green have joined the crew of the upcoming BioShock film.

Lawrence hopped on to direct the films in The Hunger Games series after Gary Ross stepped down from the position after the franchise’s first entry. Lawrence also was the director behind the 2007 post-apocalyptic Will Smith film I Am Legend. As for Green, he served as the scriptwriter for Logan, the third and final installment in the Wolverine trilogy. Green also penned the script for Blade Runner 2047, the 2017 sequel to the original Blade Runner. Per Netflix’s Twitter, Lawrence and Green are partnering to create the live-action adaptation of the hit video game BioShock.

In Feb. 2022, Netflix confirmed the development of a live-action BioShock film in collaboration with Take-Two Interactive, the original publisher of the original game. Vertigo Entertainment will also serve as a producer for the production. While Netflix announced its plans this year, talks of a BioShock film adaptation existed years before Netflix entered the picture.

BioShock was released for both Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in Aug. 2007. A film adaptation of the video game was announced merely months later, in May 2008, with Pirates of the Caribbean’s Gore Verbinksi as the director and Skyfall’s John Logan as the screenwriter. Due to budget problems and concerns over the “R” rating, the BioShock film was put on hold in 2010. The film was ultimately scrapped, and to many fans’ surprise, the idea wasn’t revisited until Netflix announced its development in February.

BioShock is a first-person shooter game developed by 2K Boston, which later became Irrational Games, and 2K Australia. The game is set in the 1960s and sees the discovery of an underwater city called Rapture, built by businessman antagonist Andrew Ryan. Along with the utopian city, players find that the chemical substance ADAM can rewrite genetic code to give superpowers.

The success of the original BioShock led to two sequels — BioShock II and BioShock infinite. Further details surrounding the BioShock live-action film, including its release date and casting information, are scarce so far.

BioShock will release on Netflix on an undetermined release date.
