The first IGI game was released back in 2000, and while it was not the most refined game at the time, it was laurelled for its visuals and amazing sound design. One thing it showed was that the IP certainly had potential. It was followed up by a sequel titled IGI 2: Covert Strike in 2003, which similarly to the first game, had a mixed reception.
With that, the series died and lay dormant. As people recalled their sweet times playing the game in their earlier days, it developed a cult status and demand for a sequel or anything related to it grew over the years.
The calls of fans were finally answered in 2019 when a new game was announced in the series. Titled IGI: Origins, it was to be developed by AntiMatter Games and would release in 2021.
The game was announced for PC, PS4 and Xbox One and the developer was well known and highly regarded for its realistic Rising Storm FPS series, so hopes were high. However, 2021 went and the game went dormant once again.
Now, finally, the developer has given us our first-ever look at the game via a gameplay trailer that features a pre-alpha build of the game.

As can be seen, even though the footage is from a pre-alpha build of the game, it seems quite impressive and visually stunning. However, this also means that it is subject to change as the developer sees fit.
The game was first announced in 2019 and was supposed to release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One back in 2021 however it was delayed.
On May 13 of this year, the developer announced that it was switching the engine from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 to deliver the best experience possible to players. Ever since no other update was given until this gameplay trailer.
What’s perplexing is that the trailer only lists PC (via Steam) as the platform of release, not even the old generation of consoles that were previously promised, leading many to believe that those versions have now been scrapped.
As the game was announced and was supposed to release even before the current generation of consoles, they were never listed as platforms for release.
However, various job listings on AntiMatter Games’ website indicate that IGI Origins will release on consoles as well.
The first interesting listing is for the position of Intermediate Level Designer. It clearly states that the hired individual will be a part of the team working on IGI: Origins. The meatier details however lie in the Requirements section of the listing.
The job requires that the individual has one 3D ‘released’ game that they can be accredited to and it is a title “on PC or Console.” Moreover, the job also requires experience in level design specific for PC Games or Console.
This is a dead ringer that the game will release, or is at least planned to release on consoles. Moreover, the Beneficial Skills section also lists experience with multiplayer action titles. In relation to their history of developing online FPS games, this comes as a no-brainer.
It also implies that the upcoming IGI: Origins will have a multiplayer component. When the first game launched in 2000, it was criticized for not having an online multiplayer mode, which was later added in the sequel. We can now expect IGI: Origins to have an online multiplayer component as well.
The second listing of note is for the position of Senior Game Programmer, which lists having shipped one or more PC/console titles as a requirement. Moreover, it lists cross-platform development as a beneficial skill they’d like the hired individual to have while listing Xbox and PS along with PC.
This clearly means that the game will arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S as every developer wants their game to reach as many audiences as possible. However, this is yet unknown whether it will launch on the previous generation of consoles as well.
Notable about the upcoming game is that, according to the gameplay seen, the character will be able to move while prone. The trailer also showcases some kind of execution or interrogation option wherein the character grabs the enemy from behind and puts a knife to their throat.
Night vision can also be seen as well, and the character has third-person interactions for certain context-sensitive situations such as climbing ladders, which was also in the first game.
As a prequel to the original games, I.G.I. Origins takes place in 1980. The protagonist is an agent named “Regent” who takes on different missions for spymasters around the globe.
You’ll be serving with the UK’s foreign intelligence service MI6 throughout the story. Eventually, how the Institute of Geotactical Intelligence aka I.G.I. started will be revealed, which brings us full circle to the “Origins” name.
The series’ penchant for first-person shooting/stealth is still in place. You’ll use different gadgets and weapons to succeed and work to prevent “a new era of nuclear annihilation.”
