The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was announced to be in development back in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. At E3 this past summer, we got another teaser for the highly anticipated sequel, which Nintendo announcing a 2022 release window.
Naturally, it’s one of this year’s most anticipated games. But will The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 actually release in 2022?

We haven’t seen or heard much since this latest teaser. Breath of the Wild 2 was absent from the Game Awards in December but apparently Nintendo re-assured fans that the game is still slated for 2022. IGN Games podcast host Peer Schneider also reported that the game is still on track.
All signs are pointing to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being 2022’s big holiday blockbuster. Obviously that’s probably what Nintendo is pushing for.
But if there’s been one theme for this generation of games, it’s been delays. A part of that is mostly due to COVID-related issues. The transition from in-office to work from home has taken its toll on the development process and we’ve seen multiple games pushed back because of it. Development started on Breath of the Wild 2 back in 2019, just before the pandemic struck, so it was almost certainly impacted. But so far Nintendo hasn’t announced any setbacks.
If there was another concern I had for Breath of the Wild 2, it’s the possibility of Nintendo announced a new Switch console. Despite how amazing Breath of the Wild was for the Switch as a launch title, it wasn’t without flaws. Inconsistent frame rate and lackluster draw distance were two minor gripes in an otherwise brilliant game.

Given that Breath of the Wild was a launch title for the Switch, it’s possible that the sequel may have ironed out the kinks with more time with the console. But there’s always the possibility of a more powerful Nintendo Switch console arriving. So far, Nintendo hasn’t committed to a new Nintendo Switch, although the Pro model has been rumored for a long time now.
If Nintendo were to release a Switch Pro model, they would be wise to launch The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 alongside it. But with the global chip shortage wreaking havoc on supply chains, who knows if that has affected Nintendo’s plans. It’s possible Nintendo could still commit to the 2022 release window for Breath of the Wild 2 with or without a new Switch console.
