Jess Stenson wins gold in marathon at Commonwealth Games after bronze medals at Gold Coast and Glasgow

Australian Jess Stenson has won gold in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, after twice finishing with bronze medals in the event.

Stenson, née Trengove, won bronze at Gold Coast 2018 and Glasgow 2014, but has broken through for the gold in 2022.

After being joined by compatriot Lisa Weightman on the dais in 2018, two other Aussies just missed out in Birmingham, with Eloise Wellings and Sinead Diver finishing fourth and fifth.

Stenson described her victory as belonging to the whole team, saying she was expecting a caffeinated gel with her water near the halfway mark of the race, and when it was not there, Wellings gave the eventual champion hers.

Like Stenson, Wellings and Diver are mothers, and the newly crowned gold medallist spoke at the finish line about the perspective and power that holds in her life.

“I think being a mum makes you stronger, physically and emotionally,” she told Channel Seven.

“So, go mums.”

Stenson was Australia’s second marathon champion on day two of the Games, after Madison de Rozario won her second straight Commonwealth gold medal in the T53/54 event.
