Kettering University to begin offering esports scholarships up to $4K

FLINT, MI — Kettering University will soon offer scholarships to students who plan to compete on the school’s esports teams.

Scholarships of up to $4,000 will be made available by the private, nonprofit university in Flint beginning this fall.

Kettering’s Esports program started in January 2020. About 70 students compete in League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Valorant and Rocket League.

Students must be academically admitted to Kettering, enrolled full-time for the upcoming academic year, compete on the esports teams and receive a recommendation from Head Coach Dan Nowaczyk as a candidate, according to a news release from the university.

“We’re looking for people who want to compete, those who want to compete at a collegiate level and grow; they want to get better and want to learn,” Nowaczyk said. “They’re looking to develop themselves as a person and as an Esports athlete.”

These scholarships are performance-related, as well. There will be rank requirements to ensure students have the correct experience in playing. They can be renewed annually, based on Nowaczyk’s recommendation, per the release.

Kettering’s Rainbow Six Siege team were crowned champions of the Fall 2020 Michigan Bandwidth Bowl. The Rocket League team finished third in the Spring 2021 Michigan Bandwidth Bowl, while the League of Legends team placed fourth in the same competition.
