Keyano College is launching a two-year Business Administration diploma in esports management this fall.

Esports refers to individuals or teams competing in video games at a professional level. Some teams and individuals are sponsored by athletic companies like Nike and Adidas. The Canadian Gaming Association says Esports directly supports more than 135,000 full-time jobs across Canada and generates almost $9 billion annually.

“Keyano College is keenly aware of the opportunity for students wanting to enter into the arena of competitive video gaming on a professional level,” said Vincella Thompson, dean of the School of University Studies, Career Programs and Academic Upgrading, in a statement.

Students will learn team and league administration, coaching, marketing, sponsorships, promotions, event and facility management, media, production and content management skills. The program will be made up of 10 courses and include face-to-face teaching and online models. Keyano added in a statement that students “will learn and apply their skills in state-of-the-art video gaming lab.”

Keyano is the second Alberta post-secondary school offering an esports management program. Last year, Mount Royal University partnered with the University of California, Irvine to offer a certificate in esports management.

Victor Ly, an MRU esports program instructor and co-founder of the Alberta Esports Association, said in a release the rapid growth of esports is creating demands for educated professionals.

“As esports grow in Alberta, it is creating opportunities to establish a proactive and sustainable ecosystem of businesses and communities to meet the growing demands,” he said in a statement.
