SAN ANTONIO – After topping 30 points in consecutive games for the first time this season, Warriors star Klay Thompson will sit out Saturday’s matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.
Thompson was listed as out (injury management) on Saturday’s injury report ahead of the Warriors’ first game of their final back-to-back of the season.
Meanwhile, Andre Iguodala and Otto Porter Jr. are expected to play Saturday and sit out Sunday’s regular-season finale against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Coach Steve Kerr hinted Thursday that he would possibly split up the nights some of his veterans were slated to rest for the final two games of the regular season.
Golden State has been particularly cautious with its veteran players returning from injury this year.
Thompson has yet to play in both games of a back-to-back this season since returning to the NBA in January following his ACL and Achilles tears. And Porter, who has battled various injuries throughout his nine-year NBA career, has played in both halves of only one back-to-back this season when he did so on Jan. 13 and 14.
Iguodala returned last month from a back injury that sidelined him for 21 games, and Kerr recently said the plan was to sit the 38-year-old for the backend of the Warriors’ final back-to-back.
The Warriors enter Sunday as the No. 3 seed of the Western Conference with a half-game advantage on the fourth-place Dallas Mavericks, who could be without Luka Doncic for their final game of the season on Sunday against the Spurs after he was assessed his 16th technical foul in Friday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
When a player is assessed 16 technical fouls, they are automatically subject to a one-game suspension. Doncic expressed hope on Friday evening that the NBA league office will rescind the technical foul and allow him to play on Sunday.
