After years of rumours, Konami has finally dusted off its popular horror brand Silent Hill with the announcement of five new projects.
The Japanese publisher gave the first details for each during a digital presentation last night, not only revealing multiple new Silent Hill video games but also ventures into other forms of entertainment.
These included:
Silent Hill 2 remake
The headline news of the presentation was a remake of 2001’s Silent Hill 2, now in development for Playstation 5 and PC. The game is being developed by Bloober Team, the studio behind acclaimed horror series Layers of Fear, which is working with the series’ regular artist Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka.
Silent Hill: Townfall
Revealed only with a teaser trailer, spin-off Silent Hill: Townfall is being developed in partnership with No Code Studios, the indie developer behind horror hits Observation and Stories Untold, and publisher Annapurna Interactive.
Silent Hill F
Another spin-off, Silent Hill F is the work of Neobards Entertainment, a Taiwan-based studio that was founded in February 2017. The game’s story will be written by Ryūkishi07, a Japanese visual novel creator best known for stories around psychological and supernatural horror.
Silent Hill: Ascension
Described as an “interactive streaming series,” Silent Hill: Ascension is a collaboration between Bad Robot Games, Behaviour Interactive, Genvid Entertainment (the studio behind The Walking Dead: Last Mile, a “massively interactive live event”), and Dj2 Entertainment (the company behind the Sonic The Hedgehog movies). This will enable the audience to collectively decide where the narrative leads, and will be made available on “multiple platforms.”
Return to Silent Hill
Konami announced a new movie adaptation of the series, Return to Silent Hill is being directed by horror-film director Christopher Gans, who worked on the original Silent Hill movie that debuted in 2006.
No release dates were given for these, with Konami promised more details “at a later date.”
The Silent Hill franchise has been dormant since a double release in 2012 with Silent Hill: Downpour for PS3 and Xbox 360 and Silent Hill: Book of Memories for PlayStation Vita.
A new title, Silent Hills, was in development with acclaimed film director Guillermo del Toro and actor Norman Reedus, but Konami cancelled the project in 2015.
