La-Mulana Director To Revive A Classic Konami Game

In what may be one of the more interesting stories you read today, Konami has just announced that after a year they’ve chosen the winner of their contest that would bring back one of their old IP’s. Takumi Naramura, the grand prize winner and the La-Mulana director of both the first and second games, has decided to revive The Maze of Galious. While we’ve covered contests before, this grand prize result is definitely something new. Let’s take a closer look at this, shall we?

What is The Maze of Galious?

The Maze of Galious was originally released in 1987 for the MSX home computer. It later went on to inspire titles such as La-Mulana and Unepic, and can perhaps best be described as a “platform-adventure game”. In The Maze of Galious, players control two characters that have two different abilities, with one being able to push stones and heavy doors while the other can survive longer underwater and shoot more projectiles. There are ten worlds hidden throughout the game, and each stage will have players fighting enemies and defeating bosses while also collecting items and power-ups.

Naramura will undoubtedly take inspiration from the main game and subsequent remakes, like the one shown in this screenshot.

The contest ran from September 30th last year to January 6th this year, and participants were told that the theme of the contest was the planning and development of “new ‘action games’ and ‘shooting games’ based on Konami game software”, which could’ve been anything including remakes, sequels, and a lot more. Basically, if Naramura had wanted to only use a specific character and create a game around that character, that would’ve been perfectly acceptable. For games that creators wanted to commercialize, Konami offered to invest “30 million yen in development funds”, which is about $209K USD. Not all that much, but it’s a lot better than nothing.
