We’ve had an early look at Intel Arc laptops from Lenovo, specifically the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (which is powered by an AMD Ryzen 6000 series CPU), as well as the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i (which is powered by an Intel processor). The 3i version of the IdeaPad Gaming laptop will include options for either Nvidia RTX 30-series graphics cards or alternatively Intel Arc GPUs, whereas the AMD Ryzen 6000 series option will just have Nvidia RTX 30-series options.
Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i with Intel Arc A370M graphics card
Early in the Mobile World Congress 2022 the following leak was released, which shows the maximum specifications possible in the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i, which includes the option of the Intel Arc A370M GPU (see under ‘Performance for Budding Gamers’ on the left). Further details of exactly what GPU options are available for each has since been revealed (see below).
What is Intel Arc?
Intel Arc (not to be confused with Intel ARK which is Intel’s Automated Relational Knowledgebase, used to compare specifications of existing Intel chips) is the upcoming series of dedicated GPUs from Intel, which are set to compete with Nvidia and AMD, particularly at the low-mid range of the price spectrum, though the most powerful (the A700) will also be looking to challenge the likes of the RTX 3070 and the RX 6800 XT. Besides the desktop versions, there will be laptop iterations of these graphics cards too (as we can see in the image above).
Intel Arc will use completely new architecture, and though we’ve got some early performance indications of how they will stack up, it’s difficult to know how they compare with AMD and Nvidia’s range based on specs alone.
Will Intel Arc work with AMD Ryzen CPUs?
Generally speaking, Intel Arc GPUs will work with AMD Ryzen CPUs as far as desktop machines are concerned, but we don’t know at this stage whether this will be a worthwhile combination, or whether you’ll lose out on big performance synergies from having matching brand Intel CPUs and GPUs.
In terms of laptop versions of the Intel Arc graphics card, it’s likely you’ll see these combined more often with Intel CPUs, as we can see with the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i (the AMD-powered IdeaPad Gaming 3 not having the option of being paired with the Arc).
