Mario is ‘dying’ today with the removal of 35th anniversary games, here are 3 times where Mario was killed during Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailers

Today is March 31, 2021. Nintendo fans knew this day would be coming eventually. At some point today, Super Mario Bros. 35, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. — all games released to celebrate Mario’s 35th anniversary — are being delisted. In addition to this, it will no longer be possible to upload new levels on the original Super Mario Maker on the Wii U after today.

While it’s currently not known why Nintendo is delisting and removing these games, fans have turned this day into a meme that suggests that today is the day that Mario dies. It’s funny to think that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailers have been showcasing Mario dying since Ridley’s trailer back in June 2018.

Ridley’s trailer started off with Samus, Mario and Mega Man walking down a narrow bridge seen in what appeared to be a futuristic ship. This caused Ridley to take a stealthy approach. He opted to take down each opponent, one by one.

Mega Man was the first to go as he was skewered in his mechanical chest. Mario and Samus appeared to be unaware of the fate that had befallen the Super Fighting Robot.

Following this, Mario was snatched up. It looked like Mario’s head was effectively crushed by Ridley’s massive grip.

All that was left of Mario was his hat. Fans were left with the idea that Ridley had killed Mario off-screen.

Ridley then proceeded to taunt Samus (and Super Mario Odyssey fans) by spinning Mario’s hat with his finger.

The trailer that revealed Minecraft’s Steve for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate started off as just a normal battle. Partway into the trailer, Sonic ended up landing a mighty forward smash on Mario, which triggered the death screen freeze that we’re all too familiar with at this point.

Mario ended up in a strange world that was covered in darkness.

Eventually, Steve appeared on the scene. He was seemingly there to rescue Mario, but Steve’s strange appearance did not appear to reassure Mario much.

Due to Mario’s hesitation, Steve was eventually forced to leave Mario behind with an explosive Creeper. The hole that was dug up by Steve was then resealed, leaving Mario with no option to escape his demise.

Mario would then be “killed” once more during Sephiroth’s trailer. After dispatching Bayonetta and Greninja, Sephiroth then charged towards Mario.

Mario was… unable to escape in time.

For a brief moment there, fans were actually made to think that Sephiroth had actually pierced through Mario with his Masamune. In the end, it was revealed that Sephiroth had either spared Mario, or Mario got extremely lucky.

However, Mario was still attached to the blade as Sephiroth began his battle with Cloud. Inevitably, Mario was violently flung from the blade.

At this point, Mario has been “killed off” in more Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailers than any other character. It would not be surprising to see Mario as the victim in the trailer that reveals Challenger Pack 10 or Challenger Pack 11.

While it is strange that Nintendo is removing Super Mario Bros. 35, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. instead of keeping them as permanently available, at least Mario will still be playable in Smash despite all the beatings he receives during character trailers.
