MEMPHIS, TENN. –Memphis softball loses both games of a doubleheader with RV Wichita State 6-2 and 6-5.
GAME 1
Senior Kailey Hilderbrand got her first start of the season in the circle for the Tigers. This was her ninth appearance in the circle for Memphis. Hilderbrand went four and two thirds innings. She gave up one run on four hits. Chyanne Ellett came in relief in the fifth inning.
Junior Erin McDonald got the start in the circle for the Shockers. This is her ninth start of the season for Wichita State. She came into today’s game with a 7-1 record and a 3.39 era.
Gracie Morton got the Tigers on the board early, as she hit a leadoff home run to right center, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Ryleigh Buck got the run back for the Shockers. She hit a solo home run to start the second inning and tie it up 1-1.
After exchanging zeroes for three innings, the Shockers took the lead scoring three runs. Lauren Johnson and Buck were walked in and Compton scored on an RBI single by Sydney McKinney to make it 4-1.
The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Kendall Lee hit a solo home run to left center to cut the lead to 4-2. The Shockers got the run back and more in the top of the seventh. Buck hit her two run home run to center, her second of the game.
The Tigers had some great defensive plays in the game. In the top of the third inning, Delaney Smith threw out McKinney at home to end the inning. Next inning, Buck lined to Sara Ann Davidson at third, she then doubled up Johnson at first for the double play. The Tigers ended the game with two double plays.
GAME 2
Mariah Nichols got the start in the circle for game two. She went three innings and a third, giving up four runs on six hits. Hallie Siems came into the circle in the top of the fourth inning. She pitched for three and two thirds innings giving up one run on one hit and had five strikeouts.
Junior Cailtin Bingham started in the circle for the Shockers. She went sox complete innings giving up six runs on five hits. Bailey Lange came in the circle in the seventh to close it out.
The Tigers got on the board first again in game two. Alyssa Dean hit a single into left to score Gracie Morton. Then LaNya Bates scored on a RBI by Baylee Smith to take a 2-0 lead. The Shockers got a run back in the top of the third inning, making it a 2-1 ball game.
Wichita State had a big inning in the fourth inning. The Shockers scored four runs, including a RBI double by McKinney.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers had their best inning of the day. After Morton scored on an RBI by Bates, Aylssa Dean crushed a two run home run over the left field to tie it up 5-5. The lead didn’t last long, as Bailee Nickerson hit a home run to lead off the seventh inning and give the Shockers a 6-5 lead.
The Tigers fall to 6-23(0-7) and the Shockers improve to 23-5(6-1).
