Along with Halo, Gears of War was one of Microsoft‘s go-to Xbox franchises. It helped solidify the Xbox 360‘s position in the mid-2000s as a legitimate contender to PlayStation‘s throne. But, unlike the Halo series, the older Gears of War games haven’t gotten much love. Because of this, fans have been asking Microsoft to give Gears of War the Halo: The Master Chief Collection treatment.
Now, it appears that dedicated Gears fans can finally get exactly what they’ve wanted.
According to this Microsoft trademark filed last week, something new related to “Gears of War” is coming.
We already know that the next Gears of War game isn’t coming until 2024/2025. They’re in the middle of working on a new and different IP all the while helping out Undead Labs with the development of State of Decay 3. This all but confirms that a Gears of War collection is on the docket.
Ideally, the long-rumored Gears of War collection will come out later this year if only to help fill the rather barren release slate of Xbox Series S/X exclusives for the holiday season. But, if not, an early 2023 release window isn’t half-bad either. It’d join Starfield and Redfall as some of the biggest names coming to Microsoft’s current-gen consoles by then.
Unfortunately, the trademark doesn’t clarify the particulars of the still-unannounced Gears of War collection. Most are hoping that The Coalition will remake the first 3 Gears games in Unreal Engine 5. Of course, this is a large undertaking and highly unlikely. Then again, The Coalition hasn’t worked on anything massive for a while, so we can’t rule that out. Even if it is just similar to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, we’re sure most fans wouldn’t mind.
In the meantime, Gears of War fans are looking forward to receiving news about the Gears of War live-action movie.
