MILWAUKEE –

The Marquette University men’s lacrosse team heads to the East Coast for a Saturday rematch with Providence at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence.

Opening face-off is set for 10 a.m. Central time and the game will air live on Friars All-Access at Friars.com/watch. Live statistics will also be available.

The Golden Eagles are coming off their first win in BIG EAST Conference play on Wednesday, a 9-8 overtime victory over St. John’s in Milwaukee. Redshirt junior Griffin Fleming posted the game-winner 1:34 into extra time on MU’s fifth shot of the period. Fellow attackman Devon Cowan led both squads with four points on a hat trick and assist, while Sean Richard made 12 saves in his first career win.

Cowan, who leads the Golden Eagles with 23 goals and seven assists, has posted a point in all 16 games of his collegiate career and scored in 14-straight contests.

Marquette held a 54-34 edge in shots over the Red Storm and claimed 15-of-21 face-offs, including the pivotal draw by Thomas Washington to open overtime.

Providence (4-6, 3-5 BIG EAST) defeated St. John’s, 19-9, in its last game to snap a three-game losing skid following the previous matchup against Marquette in Milwaukee on March 13. The Friars claimed that meeting, 12-8, on the strength of four goals in both the third and fourth quarters and a game-high five scores from Matt Grillo. MU’s Sean Richard made 16 saves in that game and Fleming posted a hat trick.

Ryan Nawrocki leads PC with 27 points on 10 goals and 17 assists, while four others have at least 19 points this season. Grillo has scored 19 times in nine games and Dan Axelson has a team-best 20 goals.

Marquette is 5-3 all-time against PC but has lost the two most recent outings, including a 15-8 loss in its last trip to PC on April 13, 2019. Marquette’s most memorable game against the Friars at Chapey Field was a 10-9 win in the championship game of the BIG EAST tournament in 2017.

The two squads are fighting for a berth in this year’s conference tournament, which will also be held in Providence on May 6-8. PC currently sits fourth in the league with three conference wins, while MU has one victory with three games remaining. Only the top four teams will compete in the league tournament.

Following Saturday’s matchup, MU has a pair of road games on the schedule at Villanova and St. John’s on April 24 and 30, respectively.
