MLB The Show 21 trailer shows off new stadium creator

MLB The Show 21 will deliver an all-time nice-to-have feature that baseball fans never reasonably expected they’d get: a stadium creator. But it makes sense. Baseball fans venerate the game’s unique, quirky, historic green cathedrals like no other team sport, and with non-uniform dimensions, the way they’re built does affect the game on the field.

Now MLB The Show players (on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, since the stadium creator mode will not be available in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of MLB 21) will be able to construct a ballpark as they see fit, not only adjusting the field dimensions, foul territory, and outfield wall height, but also the architectural style, ornamentation, and even the surrounding environment. In a new trailer released Thursday, puppet Fernando Tatis Jr. demonstrates by turning his home turf of Petco Park into an even more pitcher-friendly yard.

Broadly speaking, it looks as though Sony’s San Diego Studio put in the toolkit that developers use to make the game’s wonderful, fictitious minor league stadiums (fun fact: Shippet Stadium is named for “Ship it!” which the developers yell at each other as they’re getting close to launch date).

The video notes that users will be able to play in their custom parks in both Diamond Dynasty and Franchise mode. If you’re super-proud of your throwback/futuristic/transdimensional-cornfield creation, you may share it with the rest of the community, too. The game, which makes a historic debut on Xbox Series X this year, supports cross-platform play, so users of both console families will be able to see and share everyone’s ballparks.

MLB The Show 21 launches April 20 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It’ll be the first MLB-licensed simulation game on an Xbox platform in eight years.
