Modern Warfare 2 Phone Requirement for Multiplayer Seemingly Confirmed

When Overwatch 2 launched, one of the requirements that kind of took players by surprise was the need to include a post-paid phone number for something Blizzard calls “SMS Protect,” which was included to curb cheating and toxicity. Well, it seems might be the case for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as well.

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launching via Activision-Blizzard’s Battle.net, the site’s page updated recently to include Modern Warfare 2 as one of the games that requires a phone number. To be more specific:

Phone Number Required to Access Certain Games

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, newly created Overwatch 2 accounts, and newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts require a phone number.

At this time, the page itself is having a hard time loading, which we’re unsure whether is due to Overwatch 2’s on-going server woes, or something is about to change regarding this. Bear in mind, Blizzard hopped back on its decision to require SMS Protect for Overwatch 2 mere days after it launched. Now it only requires that for new players, which is something we’re thinking will be the same for Modern Warfare 2.

We’ve reached out to Activision regarding this and will update the post if we hear anything back.

Modern Warfare 2 will be released this October 28 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Those who pre-order will be able to play the campaign a week early.
