Monds Caps Four-Goal Rally As No. 12/11 Men’s Hockey Downs Vermont, 4-3

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Cody Monds scored the game-winning goal with 6:00 to play and Jaxson Stauber stopped 19 third period shots as the No. 12/11 Providence College men’s hockey team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Vermont, 4-3, on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

NOTES

– The Friars fell into an early hole as Vermont struck twice in the opening 4:03 on goals from Ray Vitolins and Philip Lagunov.

– The Catamounts extended the lead to 3-0 with 24 seconds remaining on Simon Jellus’ fourth goal of the season.

– The momentum turned at 4:54 of the second period as Vitolins was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding.

– Providence broke through just 13 seconds into the major power play as Patrick Moynihan buried his third goal of the season to make it a 3-1 game.

Max Crozier found a seam from the point just 23 seconds later to make it a one-goal game with his fourth goal of the season.

– Moynihan tied things up at 6:32 of the period with this second of the game and fourth of the season. The Friars struck for three power-play goals in a span of 1:25.

– Stauber stood tall during two Vermont power play chances in the third period, making 19 total saves in the final frame.

– With 6:00 to play, Crozier fired a stretch pass onto the stick of Monds and the freshman slipped a forehand shot to the far post to give the Friars the lead.

– Tyler Harmon left for the extra attacker for the final 1:57, but Stauber and the Friars held on for their third-consecutive victory.

– Friday marked the second time this season that Providence won in regulation after trailing by three goals in a game (Oct. 22 vs. Denver).

– Crozier, Moynihan, Monds, Guillaume Richard and Nick Poisson all recorded two points for the Friars.

– Poisson, the reigning Hockey East Player of the Week, leads Hockey East with 14 assists and ranks second in scoring with 17 points.

– The Friars are 6-of-11 on the power play over the last two games and registered three power-play goals in a game this season for the third time.
