Minot State third baseman Ryley Humrighouse, seen here during a plate appearance earlier this season, recorded a sac fly and was part of a successful double steal during MSU’s Wednesday doubleheader against Winona State.

The Minot State Beavers lost both games of their Wednesday doubleheader at Winona State (15-10). MSU dropped the first game of the day 12-1 in seven innings, then fell by a final score of 5-2 in the second matchup which went nine innings.

The two-game set was originally scheduled for play at Corbett Field, but was moved to Winona State due to poor field conditions in the Minot area.

There was no score after the first inning of the opening ballgame. However, the Warriors overwhelmed the Beavers with three runs in both the second and third innings, then posted six more runs in the fourth. All told, the Warriors collected 11 hits compared to just one for the Beavers.

MSU’s Zach Newman took the loss, dropping his season mark to 2-3. He allowed four earned runs in two and two-thirds innings. Offensively, a sac fly from third baseman Ryley Humrighouse accounted for Minot State’s only run of the game.

MSU fared better in the second contest, but still came out on the short end of things. The Beavers manufactured a run by executing a double steal to draw first blood. Humrighouse stole second while Kaiden Cardoso stole home to give Minot State an early 1-0 advantage in the first.

Unfortunately for the Beavers, Winona State scored five unanswered runs from that point. In the seventh, a solo homer from outfielder Drew Behling proved to be the final run of the game in a 5-2 defeat for Minot State.

Winona State collected six hits compared to three for MSU. Starting pitcher Carson Tonini suffered the loss for the Beavers as he went four and one-thirds innings while allowing three earned runs on three hits.

Now 12-9 on the year, and 10-6 within the NSIC, Minot State plans to travel to Aberdeen, South Dakota for a three-game set with Northern State on April 17 and 18. The two clubs are slated for doubleheader action on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m. and will wrap up the series with a 12 p.m. start for Sunday’s matchup.
