Multicultural exhibit on display until April 30

Nationally recognized photographer Mark Chester, author of “The Bay State: A Multicultural Landscape Portraits of New Americans,” has brought his portraits to the Milford Town Library for viewing.

The exhibit is available for public viewing anytime the library is open through April 30. To date, these portraits have been exhibited in nearly 100 libraries.

Several photographs show families: a father and son from Cambodia who now live in Lowell, naturalized 11 years apart; a mother and daughter from Guinea, naturalized seven years apart; and a couple from Ireland, naturalized 30 years apart, shown with their five American-born young sons.

Handouts are available to explain the exhibit further and to reflect on what tolerance means. Chester says tolerance is about “accepting people for who they are and treating them how you wish to be treated.”

Teaching tolerance also shows kids to “step outside their comfort zone and to understand, learn, respect and appreciate others,” he added.

The exhibit is made possible through a grant from the Milford Cultural Council, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. To make a secure contribution to the project, visit https://miracoalition.kindful.com/?campaign=271797

Contemporary Book Group

The Contemporary Book Group meets at 7 p.m. Thursday for a Zoom discussion of “Pretty Things,” by Janelle Brown.

In this unsettling yarn about the undisclosed perks and pitfalls of social media, two widely different women — one a grifter, the other an heiress — are brought together by the scam of a lifetime.

“Pretty Things” combines flawless suspense and masterful storytelling in this page-turner from The New York Times bestselling author of “Watch Me Disappear,” which will soon to be a series adaptation produced by and starring Nicole Kidman.

To reserve a copy of “Pretty Things,” or for more information about the group, email Shelley at ssgammt@cwmars.org.

Cookbook Club

The Cookbook Club meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, on Zoom to talk about dishes they will be making from “My Greek Table,” by Diane Kochilas.

The Greek cookbook contains many interesting recipes. It will be available for members to borrow toward the end of the month at the circulation desk. A link to the meeting will be sent via email a few days before the meeting.

Buckley articles archived

The library reports that hundreds of articles about local history that historian and scholar James Buckley wrote throughout the 1980s and 1990s for the Tri County Advertiser, The Milford Gazette and the Middlesex News have been transferred to microfilm for permanent archiving.

While the Tri County Advertiser and the Milford Gazette are no more, the Middlesex News morphed into the Metrowest Daily News with changes in ownership over time.

A helpful index of the articles appears at the beginning and end of the microfilm reel to allow researchers to find articles by subject or name.

Just a few intriguing titles include “Who Was the Leader of the White Slavery Gang?” and the “Disappearance of the Milford Barber.”

Buckley previously served as superintendent of Milford Public Schools. He continues to be a voracious reader and is active in the Milford community.

More computer time

Time on the public computers has been extended from one half hour to an hour. The new time will show automatically when patrons are logged in from the information desk.

Draw Dewey contest

We have had nine entries to the Draw Dewey (the dog) contest. The winner will be decided by the social media team.

View the entries on the Milford Town Library Facebook page. The date for a decision is still to be determined.

Tax information

The library has received federal IRS tax forms and resident and nonresident Massachusetts forms. They are located on a cart near the front door. Please do not take more than you need for your personal tax preparation.

In-person tax aide appointments through AARP were limited this year. But if you still need help completing your taxes, and have access to a computer and the internet, you may be able to receive virtual tax assistance from AARP.

Check out its website at https://taxaide.aarpfoundation.org and click “Get Started” to see if you qualify for online help.

Museum pass update

There are two available museum passes available, for the New England Aquarium and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

New digital resources

The library has added a few more databases for patrons to enjoy.

We’ve had AtoZ World Food, and now we’ve got AtoZ Food America, which provides recipes, ingredient and culture notes from all other regions in the U.S.

Lingo Lite is a language database/tool that is meant to give travelers quick helpful phrases in more than 30 languages. They use a multimedia approach to help embed the learning and users can choose their interface language (i.e.: Latin-American Spanish to English, French to Greek). It’s different than and a good alternative to Mango Languages.

A to Z Maps Online gives you great variety of maps all in one place and also some educational tools for educators. It’s got world, city, geology, topographic, climate, NASA maps, earthquake maps & more.

These are free to all library cardholders.

Book donations

Donations of books and other items can be accepted only on Fridays and Saturdays.

Please bring new or gently used books, DVDs, CDs, and puzzles in and place them on the cart near the stairs and elevator.

Food pantry donations

The Milford Town Library accepts donations to the Daily Bread Food Pantry every day. During the pandemic, when food insecurity has become more severe for many, donations of food for the pantry are especially welcome. Donations may be placed in the blue bucket under the Friends of the Library Book Table.

Library of Things

The Milford Library now has even more items in its Library of Things that may be borrowed. This nontraditional collection of things is to help our patrons learn, play and grow.

The Library of Things includes: Garmin GPS, Zircon Studsensor, a scanner, PlayStation Classic, wireless speaker, metal detector, portable projector screen, even a ukulele and many more.

New items include Playstation 4 and 5 controllers and Xbox One controller. A sewing machine is sought.

Visit milfordtownlibrary/things.org to find pictures of categories of the “Things” we have available. Click on a picture and all the things in that category will be listed. Don’t limit yourself to books, DVDs, and books on CD, request “Things,” too.
