Multiplayer game Killer Queen Black to be shut down and delisted on Xbox

Developer Liquid Bit has announced that servers for Killer Queen Black will go offline in November and that the multiplayer platformer will be delisted from the Xbox Store imminently.

Liquid Bit CEO Matt Tesch explained in a statement that the reason behind the sudden server closure is because the game was built on Amazon GameSparks, which Amazon has decided to shut down. As a result, Killer Queen Black‘s servers will close on November 30th, and the game will be removed from sale on the Xbox Store on October 6th.

Killer Queen Black’s online multiplayer will shut down on November 30th

“It’s with a heavy heart that we’re announcing that after three amazing years, KQB will be going offline on November 30th, 2022,” Tesch said. “This is not something that was planned or foreseen. KQB was built on top of Amazon GameSparks, the service that provides the backend functionality for our game. Unfortunately, Amazon decided to shut down this service on September 30th. We moved mountains and spent a treasure to migrate to a different provider, but unfortunately, the task amounted to an almost complete rewrite of the game, and that’s just not on the cards for Liquid Bit at this time. We’re working on plans to open-source the game, and hopefully, with some luck and support, it will rise again in the future.

“Please know that we did everything possible to keep the online component alive – unfortunately, it was just out of our capability as an indie developer.”

Tesch says Liquid Bit has secured a two-month extension from Amazon to keep Killer Queen Black’s servers online until November 30th. As it stands, 27 Killer Queen Black achievements will likely be discontinued, though the Killer Queen Black team has said it is looking into the achievements.

Sadly, the developer also announced on Twitter that Killer Queen Black will be removed from sale across all platforms on October 6th, so if you want to own this one and get it finished before the server closure, you’re going to have to buy the game now.
