October saw the release of several big games on PlayStation and although we don’t have a blockbuster PS5 exclusive this year (thanks to the delay of Horizon Forbidden West), there’s still plenty on the way next month to keep you busy.
For first person shooters, we have the showdown between FPS heavyweights Call of Duty: Vanguard and Battlefield 2042. Although these games are frequently pitted against each other every year, Call of Duty: Vanguard and Battlefield 2042 couldn’t be more different.
Call of Duty: Vanguard, for instance, is set in World War II and features a campaign that explores the origins of the Special Forces. Multiplayer tends to lean more towards fast-paced matches with smaller teams.
On the flip side, Battlefield 2042 is set in the near future with the world ravaged by global warming, collapsed economies and broken alliances. There’s no story campaign as DICE opted to focused solely on multiplayer. And what we have is the biggest and most robust multiplayer suite we’ve ever had in a Battlefield game. There are three core multiplayer experiences: All-Out Warfare (comprised of Conquest and Breakthrough modes), Battlefield Portal (a multiplayer sandbox), and Hazard Zone (a high-stakes mode that involves capturing intel and extracting it). It’s worth noting that Battlefield 2042 on next-gen also supports up to 128 players in Conquest and Breakthrough.
In addition to these two blockbuster shooters is another massive release. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a remaster of three classic GTA titles: Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas. Each game still retains its classic feel although the graphics have been updated and the controls modernized.
Some other notable releases include the PS5 version of Knockout City, which is a free upgrade if you already own the PS4 version. Knockout City is also going to be free for PS Plus members in November. The Anniversary Edition of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is coming if you happen to be the last person on the planet who still hasn’t played this RPG. And lastly, Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, the next expansion for the long-running MMORPG.
