New Ulm Steel prepare for 3 games this week | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM — Coming off a 9-2 win over the Minnesota Loons Saturday, the New Ulm Steel hope to build off of that when they host the Alexandria Blizzard at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday at the New Ulm Civic Center in a NA3HL game.

It will also be “Dollar Dog Night” for Fred’s Hot Dogs.

“Alexandria will be a pretty good test for us,” Steel assistant coach Erick Bromberg said. “Right now they are in third place [at 8-7]. We played a good team game on Saturday and it was a good bounce back game from a 6-3 loss to the Loons on Friday. The win showed a lot about our character in our locker room. The win Saturday snapped our seven-game losing streak. We made a statement Saturday who was the better team.

“It was one of the better games that we have played and it was a building block,” Bromberg said.

One of the things he was happy with was the play in their defensive zone which is still a work in progress.

“Sometime it is two steps forward and one step back. Defense leads to offense and defense is what builds championships,” he said.

Bromberg said that the Steel is still looking for some solid scoring and found some in the win Saturday in a hat trick from Colby Nickel and two goals each from Zach Siegert and Gus Cantwell.

“I think that our line of Cantwell, Jack Laser and Lahoussine Salama has really stepped up in that role,” Bromberg said. “They are our youngest line on the team and they have gotten us going in the right direction.”

This weekend the Steel will take their longest road trip of the season when they take a seven-hour bus trip for Friday and Saturday games in Peoria, Illinois.

“It is going to he a long weekend for us,” Bromberg said. “We plan to make stop somewhere in between to let the players stretch their legs for 15 minutes. And we have to come off of that long bus ride and jump off to a quick start.”

“These next two weeks are tough — we are almost at the halfway part of the season. The next two weeks are going to determine how the rest of our season is going to go. We have six games in the span of 10 days.

The Steel did add Sam Leven, who is from El Paso, Texas.
