After a three-year hiatus, Nintendo announced in their E3 2021 Nintendo Direct that a new WarioWare game would be coming to the Nintendo Switch. The WarioWare series are best known for their implementation of so-called “microgames” — these games have you frantically figure out what task you need to complete and execute it in a few seconds. In every “stage,” players must complete around four microgames before getting to the boss. Losing a microgame means you lose a sort of “health bar”, which if depleted, causes you to lose that stage and you’ll need to start over.
While Nintendo hasn’t exactly revealed much on the story side of things, we do know that Wario always has something crafty up his sleeve. Wario’s business, WarioWare Inc., is not always exactly… successful. After yet another one of his business schemes goes wrong, so Wario and his friends must set things right by completing hundreds of tasks — that’s where you come in! You can help Wario and all the other characters bring WarioWare Inc. to its former glory by making your way across the world, winning one microgame at a time.
Most WarioWare games feature a unique gimmick, such as using the motion controls of the Wii remote or using the touch screen on the Nintendo DS. Wario as a character is certainly a departure from Nintendo’s family-friendly cast, with crude jokes, ripped pants, and a LOT of farting. Needless to say, it definitely facilitates some humorous variety to Nintendo’s Switch lineup.
In the Nintendo Treehouse Live event, seven characters were announced:
Though Nintendo’s attempts to keep couch co-op alive are appreciated, online play has become more and more necessary for friends and family who are unable to visit each other. Nintendo has revealed that the game’s co-op multiplayer can be played with two to four players both locally or online. The Nintendo Treehouse Live did not show how gameplay will function with more than two players, but we’ll be sure to update this space as soon as new information is released!
Wario: This iconic Mushroom Kingdom character loves to use his handy jetpack, when he’s not eating garlic.
Cricket: Your standard run-n-jump character, this crewmate can hit blocks directly above him.
18-Volt: This cunning nerd uses his big brain to shoot projectiles in a straight line, which he can use to propel himself upward.
Mona: A specialist in distance, Mona throws her trusty boomerang. What goes around, comes around!
Dribble & Spitz: This unique canine duo can be controlled by two people during two-player co-op!
Dr. Crygor: This futuristic character can drfy gravity itself by “swimming” through the air.
9-Volt: This mischievous skateboard-riding kid can shoot his yo-yo to get the job done!
The Nintendo Treehouse Live presentation showed that six additional characters would be available to unlock. We’ll be sure to update this space once new information has been released.
It goes without saying that Nintendo will always find a way to innovate, which means that this game, as micro as the games may be, has the potential to be one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch.
