Fans believe something is planned for the Donkey Kong franchise after Nintendo filed a new trademark concerning the series.
A recent trademark application by Nintendo may have just announced the existence of a new Donkey Kong game.
The legendary gaming barrel-throwing, banana-loving gigantic ape hasn’t experienced a stand-alone triple-A game since Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Deep Freeze for the Wii U in 2014. The last Donkey Kong game, in general, was Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars in 2015.
Fans have been left wondering when Donkey Kong will return to the gaming spotlight in a fresh interactive adventure, even though DK has made numerous supporting appearances in ensemble titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the well-reviewed Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle DLC.

Nintendo recently amended the trademark for the Donkey Kong series, but the corporation appears to be planning more than just a standard copyright claim. A few provisions of the new trademark particularly mention the well-known and enduring Donkey Kong series and refer to downloadable games for portable and electronic consoles. Of course, the Switch sounds a lot like this.
Industry observers with keen eyes picked up on the news, such as KRoolKountry, who remarked that “Nintendo has updated the trademark for Donkey Kong. Rather than being a routine extension of an existing trademark, this is a new trademark with updated verbiage pertaining specifically to video games including downloadable programs for portable and electronic consoles.”
For four of its classic games, including Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the business filed trademark applications back in May. This assertion was made alongside numerous other titles in the Metroid and Zelda series, most of which were for the same platform.
Players have kept the gaming icon alive while they still wait for the announcement of the upcoming mainline Donkey Kong game by ranking their favourite Donkey Kong games, sharing some of their less-than-unanimous opinions of earlier games, and making fan demos of the great ape running across barren hillsides like the ones seen in the most recent Sonic Frontiers gameplay trailers. Many fans are eager to hear any news of a brand-new standalone Donkey Kong game for the Nintendo Switch given all of the continuing debate of the previous Donkey Kong titles and the recent commemoration of the iconic mascot’s 40th anniversary.
