Super Mario Odyssey isn’t available on PC (pic: Nintendo).
A reader suggested that Nintendo start releasing its games for PC, so Nintendo can have a safe net.
That, mainly for me, is that Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard based on the inevitability of everything. We all know that they will get the go ahead for the deal and the more governments make up the pretence to investigate them the more absurd it all seems. Microsoft have money, big money, so they will get what they want. It’s the way of the world and its patronising to pretend otherwise.
There’s nothing anyone would do to stop it, and it will take several years to realize that all the arguments against it happening were fair, at which point nothing will be done, again. This is Sony’s beginning. You can see that they know how desperate they were to stop the deal coming through, and yet it would take them a long time to get out of the industry, I feel it’s inevitable. Both them and Microsoft do the same thing in general in games, except for Microsoft’s ten times the money.
Nintendo are however a very different business. What happens to Call Of Duty and other Activision and Blizzard games is almost irrelevant to them. With that, the reality is it will likely never be the biggest company for the game. It will let the attention more onto western developers, technologies and game styles that aren’t involved with.
The fact that Nintendo is so different to Microsoft gives them the opportunity. It is bludgeoning its way to success, but it’s not in the works of today, I don’t see, in Japan or in the family friendly gaming that Nintendo is the specialise in. By common understanding, they try to succeed, but since the gaming industry has known for decades there is no other thing like Nintendo. No one can buy that to rival them.
So does that mean that Nintendo can just sit out the acquisition wars and continue as usual? Being acquainted with them, that’s exactly what they’re trying but I think that would be extremely dangerous. Nintendo is only ever a flop console away from disaster and they had plenty of flops in their time. In fact, this is almost one on, but it’s not one off, so there is a good chance that Switch 2 won’t succeed.
Nintendo need to bring back their backups. People were in the military. However, those days were over and in all probability they were actually risky, since they also have to get the hardware themselves. As soon as you know, you’ll see what I’m going with this, but a hard answer from the board, in my opinion, is the real answer. Don’t ignore it, embrace it and bring it all to it.
Imagine a virtual console, with all the game in each format, the PC you could subscribe to. That would sell like an organization. And no matter how far, they can make everything in their own way and add many new games before they come.
Now obviously there’s some games that would be difficult to port, as they use motion control, but I think that’s fine. Just make it clear these are PC versions, and a bit different, and the thing is that they’re fine. It even gives fans an alternative to their both versions, making them more money for the console. Who wouldn’t want to play Zelda: Breath Of The Wild in 4K with an unlocked frame rate and a special low-res PC texture pack?
Of course there is a major problem, but it seems to me that it doesn’t seem to be all of the truth about it, but one of the many reasons Nintendo would be against is modding. Nintendo hates people messing with their stuff and I would like to think that people may play with their code so they wouldn’t support the PC more than other more legitimate reasons.
To me, I don’t know what the answer to this question is. Maybe it’s technologically a useful solution, that can prevent others from hacking games, but this will be like a red rag to a doll for some people. I hope that Nintendo can solve the issue, but I wonder how they want them to have begun and finish with the game.
