Nioh Xbox version ruled out by Team Ninja, again

If you’ve been patiently waiting for a Nioh Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S release, we have some bad news. In an interview with our friends over at VGC, Team Ninja’s Fumihiko Yasuda has confirmed that the studio has no plans to bring the title to Microsoft platforms.

When asked “is there any chance of the Nioh series coming to the platform in the future?” Yasuda replied that “there’s nothing really to note about that. Currently, there’s not really too much of a possibility of having Nioh on Xbox platforms.”

Nioh launched in 2017 exclusively on PlayStation 4 before making the leap over to PC. A popular alternative to FromSoftware’s own Dark Souls series, it marked a return to form for Team Ninja after the middling performance of Ninja Gaiden 3. A sequel, Nioh 2, was similarly successful, expanding upon the original game’s character customisation and frenetic combat.

In the same VGC interview, Yasuda and Masaaki Yamagiwa (producer of Bloodborne) talked up their latest project, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Published by Koei Tecmo, the upcoming title retells the Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga through the eyes of a lone warrior, standing in stark contrast to the company’s long-running Dynasty Warriors franchise. Try the Wo Long demo for yourself and you’ll see where it overlaps with Nioh and the Soulsborne series while introducing some interesting gameplay concepts of its own.

Those who are able to clear the demo will receive the Crouching Dragon helmet special item in the full version of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty as a bonus. A survey will also be issued through the demo so players can give feedback that Team Ninja can use to make any changes during Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s continued development. This echoes the same approach Team Ninja had with Nioh, giving players an early build well ahead of its launch window, before making adjustments based on community feedback.

That’s not all Team Ninja is working on, having recently unveiled Rise of the Ronin – a PS5 exclusive samurai RPG. In other Koei Tecmo news, Dynasty Warriors devs, Omega Force, will partner with EA on its new game, Wild Hearts, with a debut trailer landing tomorrow.
