Nihon Falcom has had a long and varied history within the video game industry, releasing games with a legacy as sprawling as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, though without reaching the worldwide acclaim its contemporaries have.
That said, whether it is their long-running series Ys or The Legend of Heroes, these games have a loyal following and have official English releases published by NIS America.
While there have been consistent releases of Nihon Falcom’s library of games translated into English, like the releases of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox and the The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy, there are still those that have only been released in Japan.
Thankfully, four of these previous Japan-only releases will be released in English officially through the Epic Games Store soon.
These games are The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero, The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure, The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, and The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails.
The first two games, Zero and Azure, are part of the Crossbell duology of turn-based RPGs. They were originally released on the PlayStation Portable, and were remastered for the PlayStation 4 in 2020.
Both games had fan translation patches made by The Geofront, and in a stunning move by NIS America, The Geofront are the official partners to translate these games for the official English release.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie serves as a semi-sequel to the previous two games, but adds in two extra scenarios that introduce new protagonists into the fold. This game was originally released for the PS4 in 2020.
Lastly, we have The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, a spin-off within the franchise that is an action RPG, instead of a turn-based RPG like the previous three games. This game also saw an initial release on the PSP before getting a PS4 remaster in Japan this year.
These four games will be seeing English releases for the next few years, with The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero kicking things off with a release in Fall 2022. The others will follow suit sometime in 2023.
All four of these previously Japan-only games will be released on Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
