DURBAN North police have opened a case of fraud after a man was scammed out of more than R9 800.
According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the victim had spotted an online advert for a Sony PS5 at a reasonable price.
“The victim spotted the deal on an online store and the ‘seller’ claimed to be from Braamfontein. He was asked to deposit the full amount for the item, which he did. He was told by the suspect the PS5 would arrive within a few days. However, that delivery never matrialised and any attempts to get hold of the seller have been fruitless. The local resident knew he had then been scammed and contacted police. A case of fraud has now been opened,” Deokaran said.

Deokaran said they have recorded an increase in people being defrauded online.
He urged residents and members of the public not to fall for these types of scams.
“We are urging residents and members of the public to do their homework and find out if the person you are speaking to when purchasing items online is legitimate. If a deal seems too good to be true, in most cases it is. We are also asking residents who have fallen prey to these online scams to open cases at their respective police stations,” he said.
