OG Xbox 360 fans get Microsoft disappointed news

Longtime fans of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console may find themselves disappointed by a new update from the company. As the Xbox 360 was launched in 2005, it came with a earliest version of the Xbox dashboard that fans dubbed the “Blades”. The Xbox 360 and the subsequent Xbox One and Xbox series X consoles were introduced in numerous dashboard iterations. It’s this Blades setup that has continued to resonate with fans a long time. The fans hoped that the Blades would one day come back in a new form, but, in fact, Microsoft made clear that this won’t happen.

In a recent interview on the Official Xbox Podcast, Microsoft’s own Larry Hyrb responded to the requests for the Xbox 360 Blades model to be returned to the Xbox Series X. Although Hyrb seemed to speak great about what Blades offered for the time, he said that this visual style wouldn’t work with the Xbox ecosystem now.

No, you can’t make the Blades back, Hyrb said to fans on the road while discussing upcoming dashboard updates. They were very nice. You can’t have them back as they don’t scale what we want to do.

In short, this is not a huge shock and it’s hard to agree with what Hyrb said. Even though Blades were great on Xbox 360, they existed at a time where the digital ecosystem on Xbox wasn’t actually changing. With new, modern feature like Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft Store and an array of social aspects now present on Xbox consoles, it’s hard to see how they might work in the Blades structure. Though Blades was very good for the time, it seems that Xbox fans are simply going to need to accept that this dashboard is actually a thing of the past.

Do you think that the Xbox 360 Blades dashboard style might work now on current Xbox consoles? And what do you think of the Xbox dashboard now which Microsoft uses?
