Overwatch 2 is now available for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. If you’re on the fence about which version manages to stay ahead of its competitor in terms of resolution and frame rate, read ahead.
The answer to this question is quite simple. As it turns out, the game runs equally well on both of the current-generation consoles. On the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, you have the option to run Overwatch 2 in 3 graphical presets, namely Resolution mode, Balanced mode, and Performance mode.
The 3 different graphics modes featured in Overwatch 2 on PS5, Xbox Series X. and Xbox Series S are as follows:
PS5
- Resolution Mode: 2160p/60fps
- Balanced Mode: 1440p/60fps
- Performance Mode: dynamic 2240x1260p/120fps
Xbox Series S
- Resolution Mode: 1440p/60fps
- Balanced Mode: 1080p/60fps
- Performance Mode: 720p/120fps
Xbox Series X
- Resolution Mode: 2160p/60fps
- Balanced Mode: 1440p/60fps
- Performance Mode: dynamic 2560x1440p/120fps
The graphical settings in each of the 3 modes are identical across all three consoles, and they only differ in terms of resolution. Overwatch 2 runs at an identical resolution on the PS5 and Xbox Series X in both Resolution and Balanced mode. In Resolution mode, it runs at a native 4K, while in Balanced mode it runs at a native 1440p. In both modes, the game targets a frame rate of 60fps.
The mode where the two versions differ is the Performance mode, which targets a frame rate of 120fps on all three consoles. In this mode, the PS5 runs the game at a dynamic 2240x1260p, with 2048x1260p being the common resolution across tests. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X runs Overwatch 2 in Performance mode at a dynamic 2560x1440p, with common 1920x1440p being the common resolution across tests. As such, the average vertical resolution is higher on Xbox, but the average horizontal resolution is higher on PS5. The end result is that both versions achieve very similar image quality.
Ultimately, the difference comes down to your ecosystem and controller of choice. While Overwatch 2 does take advantage of the PS5’s DualSense controller by utilizing its haptics and adaptive triggers in subtle ways, it’s disappointing to see that the game does not offer gyro aim and Flick Stick support as an alternative to aiming with the right analog stick.
