The Presentation College Saints jumped out to early leads in both games on Saturday before being swept by the Valley City State University Vikings.
The Saints jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first game of a doubleheader before falling 19-10. The Saints took an early 3-2 lead in the second game as the Vikings defeated the Saints 17-3.
Game One Recap
Francisco Avena hit his first home run of the season, a 2-run homer over the left field fence. Avena brought home Zachary Edwards on the hit as Wolf’Don Thorson scored on Edwards single to center field.
The Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at three and hitting a home run to match the Saints.
The Saints doubled their lead in the top of the second as Tyler Austin hit a 2 RBI triple to deep right center. Tyus Stanley and Trevor Ball scored on Austin’s hit as the Saints took a 5-3 lead. Thorson stole home for the Saints sixth run of the game. The Saints defense held the Vikings without a hit in the bottom of the second. Ball hit an RBI single to right field as Evyn Booth extended the Saints lead to four at 7-3 in the top of the third.
The Vikings’ Chase Feller hit a 3-run homer in the inning, bringing the Vikings within one. After holding the Saints without a hit in the top of the fourth, the Vikings added four runs on four hits.
Trailing 10-6, R.J. Galvez scored for the Saints as Austin grounded out in the top of the fifth. Hitting his second home run of the season, Tomas Frutos hit a 2 RBI ball past center field. Trent Williams scored on the ball as the Saints tied the game at 10.
The Vikings hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth as they regained the lead. The Saints were held to a single hit in the top of the seventh before the Vikings added two runs on three hits, including a home run.
The Saints recorded one additional hit in the top of the eighth. The Vikings recorded four hits and five runs in the bottom of the eighth, defeating the Saints 19-10.
Game Two Recap
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as Thorson scored on Galvez’s single. Galvez scored for the Saints as Williams reached base on the fielder’s choice. Kyle Angielski got in the scoring action, hitting a single RBI as Edwards scored the third run for the Saints.
The Vikings’ JT Reed hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first, bringing the Vikings within one. The Vikings took the lead in the bottom of the third, hitting back-to-back home runs. The Vikings hit their fourth home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as the Vikings scored five runs on four hits. Leading 9-3, the Vikings defense held the Saints to one hit in the top of the fifth.
After hitting a 2-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings hit a grand slam in the sixth. The Vikings recorded six runs on four hits in the sixth, extending their lead to 14 at 17-3.
