Atlus and SEGA are clearly in bed with Xbox for the upcoming Persona ports — and we’ve known that for a while. Not only are the new versions of Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 3 Portable coming to Game Pass — while PlayStation users have to pay with no upgrade path — Microsoft even managed to place embargoes on key announcement details. Indeed, when the ports were first revealed, nothing was allowed to be said about their release on non-Xbox or PC platforms — namely PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
And again, just recently, Atlus was seemingly unable to mention those same platforms on social media, when it confirmed the release date for Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden. It instead used the catch-all term “modern platforms”, while the related graphics only showed Xbox logos.
So yeah, Xbox and Atlus sitting in a tree, etc., but the deal actually goes further than we thought. As per Gematsu, Xbox Series X|S is getting native versions of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden. Meanwhile, the games are limited to PS4 on the PlayStation side of things — there won’t be any PS5 ports (at least, not yet).
In truth, this could well be a non-issue. It’s not like these ports of a PSP game and a PS Vita game respectively will have much more to offer on current-gen hardware — or so you’d think. Still, it’s yet another instance of PlayStation users being sold short thanks to the deal that’s in place between Microsoft and Atlus / SEGA.
What do you make of this? Should there be native PS5 versions of these ports, or do you doubt that it’ll even make a difference? Rebel against authority in the comments section below.
