Game developer Eyeballistic Games has a dream: It wants to remake Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and the project received the blessing of Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon back in 2016. Unfortunately, according to the developer, IP owner Warner Bros. did not believe the game would sell more than 100,000 units worldwide, thus not making it a worthwhile financial investment. However, in the five years since, Eyeballistic has better established itself and is ready to prove it can push some serious sales. In fact, Eyeballistic now wants to remake Mortal Kombat Trilogy with Unreal Engine 5 (UE5), has created a proof of concept or two for it, and has started a petition to illustrate to Warner Bros. the demand for such a project. The petition has already surpassed 15,000 signatures.
Eyeballistic has gotten extremely specific about its intentions in the petition: It wants to sell a Mortal Kombat Trilogy UE5 remake on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC for $39.99, with online matchmaking, global leaderboards, and smooth rollback-enabled online play, plus 4K resolution and 60 FPS where applicable. The goal is to approach Warner Bros. with the petition once it has attracted 100,000 signatures and then to potentially use crowdfunding to further demonstrate demand for the game.
The couple proof-of-concept videos Eyeballistic has created for a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake are simultaneously extremely simple and visually stunning. It’s just Scorpion and Baraka, standing still but with idle motions, in a mostly static environment — but it looks awesome. And at this early stage, that’s frankly enough to get people excited. Sign the petition if you want to see a Mortal Kombat Trilogy UE5 remake on modern platforms. The game originally launched in 1996, landing on PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64 that year, and its main claim to fame was its then-vast roster of characters and levels.
