In November, Sony and Microsoft launched their next-gen consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GamesIndustry.biz has revealed the monthly video game sales in the U.K. for March 2021, and Sony’s PlayStation 5 has already managed to outsell Nintendo’s Wii U (in addition to Dreamcast and PlayStation Vita).
Everyone knows that the Wii U was a commercial failure, so it is no surprise that Sony has been able to surpass its U.K. sales so quickly. The console was home to a variety of excellent first-party titles, but Nintendo was unable to capitalize on third-party support, among other issues. This has now changed with the Nintendo Switch, with former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé stating in a past interview that the hybrid console was a “make or break product.”
GamesIndustry.biz also reveals that March was heavily dominated by Nintendo Switch software for physical sales. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is still at the top of the rankings, followed closely by Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Monster Hunter Rise.
