Popeye Nintendo Switch Game Arrives This Week

Popeye Nintendo Switch game has been announced, bringing a classic cartoon to consoles for the first time in over a decade.

Popeye the Sailor Man is a character that originally appeared in newspaper comic strips and is still running to this day. This character is perhaps better known thanks to a series of animated cartoons and movies that have been released over the years.

While there are plenty of video games that get animations (such as Ratchet & Clank and Sonic the Hedgehog), things go the other way, too, with popular cartoons getting made into video games. Naturally, Popeye’s popularity led to several such adaptations over the years, the most recent of which was 2005’s Popeye: Rush for Spinach on the Game Boy Advance. Now, a brand-new game based on this classic character is coming to the Nintendo Switch.

What We Know About the Popeye Nintendo Switch Game

The Popeye Nintendo Switch game echoes the gameplay of the NES game, though you shouldn’t expect a remaster on par with something like Battletoads. While it maintains the same style of gameplay, the graphics aren’t quite as impressive.

As Nintendo Everything reports (via ResetEra), this new Popeye game echoes the gameplay of the arcade classic. Popeye’s longtime beau Olive Oyl will throw hearts and letters from a perch high up in the level and Popeye has to catch them while avoiding hazards such as a witch, a vulture, and Popeye’s longtime rival Brutus. Gathering enough collectibles will allow you to progress to the next level.

Although the graphics are a bit jank, it looks like the Popeye Nintendo Switch game could be a fun throwback to the arcade classics of yesteryear. Best of all, you won’t have to wait too long to play it — you’ll be able to buy Popeye on the Nintendo Switch on Thursday, November 4, 2021, at the price of $12.99 or your regional equivalent.
