STARTERS
Texas Tech returns to the road for a Tuesday matinee at Dallas Baptist, which will be a rematch between the two squads that faced off last Tuesday at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders won that contest, 8-4, behind four late runs in a game that was tied 4-4 until the bottom of the seventh. The contest at DBU will be Tech’s first true road game of the season, despite its first three games of the season being played less than 15 miles away from Horner Park, Globe Life Field.
The Dallas Baptist radio team of Reagan Ratcliff and Brendan Smith will provide the call for one of four special television broadcast produced by DBU for broadcast on Bally Sports Southwest. Games airing on Bally Sports Southwest will also stream live on the Bally Sports app and on ballysports.com when a consumer authenticates through their pay-tv service. A NEW YEAR
The 2022 Red Raiders feature 21 new faces and 19 veterans. Tech returns six position players that started at least 30 games and 11 pitchers including Brandon Birdsell who was selected in the 11th round of last year’s MLB draft. Meanwhile, Jace Jung is who’s grabbed the headlines, as the 2021 Big 12 Player of the Year, enters 2022 as the conference’s preseason player of the year, a Golden Spikes Watch Lister, and a five-time first team preseason All-American.
BIG 12 HONORS
Ty Coleman was selected as the Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week the conference announced on Monday. The award covers games played Feb. 21-27. In four games, Coleman hit .471 with 11 RBI and two doubles and two home runs, including a go-ahead 3-run blast in the seventh inning to clinch a series sweep for the Red Raiders over Kent State. The junior designated hitter had three multi-hit games, including a 3-for-5 performance with two doubles to open a doubleheader Sunday. He had four RBI in two different games, including Texas Tech’s midweek win against Dallas Baptist. For the week, Coleman had a 1.441 OPS, scored six runs, and four of his eight hits went for extra bases. These are Coleman’s first weekly honors from the Big 12.
HEY FRESHMAN
The young guns of Texas Tech’s 2022 squad have made its presence known just seven games in the season. Most notably right fielder Owen Washburn (7 starts), catcher Hudson White (7 starts) and right-handed pitcher Trendan Parish.
- Washburn: ranks second or is tied for second on the team in batting average (.333) and runs scored (6) and hits (8). His top highlight came in his first collegiate game, providing the 2-out, walk-off single to give Tech a 7-6 win against Michigan on Feb. 18.
- White: the Red Raiders lost the veteran leadership behind the dish in Braxton Fulford, who started 144 games and was drafted in the sixth round by the Colorado Rockies in last year’s MLB Draft. The freshman from Byron Nelson HS in Keller, Texas has stepped right in to be a steady presence for this year’s pitching staff starting six games behind the dish.
- Parish: Owns a 0.00 ERA and is the only pitcher on staff to have a clean sheet of those that have pitched 5.0 innings or more. The freshman earned three saves in three appearances during the Red Raiders’ recent four-game homestand. He struckout eight of the 14 batters he faced in those three games.
RED RAIDER NATION TRAVELS
Saturday’s games at the State Farm Showdown were the highest neutral site attendance (10,515) of the season, and the seventh-biggest crowd in college baseball during opening weekend. A large contingent of that crowd was from the scarlet and black as “Raider, Power” chants even broke out during Saturday’s opening game between K-State and Michigan, which was about 2 p.m. when the Texas Tech basketball game went final, prior to the baseball team’s 3 p.m. scheduled game against Auburn.
