Last week, the Australian branch of McDonald’s celebrated 50 years of fast food and clowns with the announcement of a series of Twitch streams. These streams would feature popular Australian streamers playing games like FIFA21, Mario Kart, and Night in the Woods. Viewers would also be eligible to win prizes, with 50 lucky winners getting their hands on some PS5 controllers with a custom McDonald’s-themed design. Unfortunately, along with the streams being delayed, the PlayStation 5 controllers won’t be part of the prize pool.
In a statement sent to Press Start Australia, McDonald’s announced that the streams, originally starting on August 1st, would be delayed to an unknown date. However, the more notable news is that the PS5 controllers will not be included in the giveaway. “Sony PlayStation has not authorized the use of its controller in promotional materials related to the proposed Stream Week event and we apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the statement says. Other prizes, such as McDonald’s 50th birthday hoodies and free channel subscriptions, are unaffected.
It sounds like the main issue with this was a lack of communication between McDonald’s and Sony. However, some have noted that Sony has been strict on custom plates, skins, and accessories. Last November, VGC reported on how Sony threatened legal action against a peripheral company unless they pulled their custom plates from sale and canceled any orders of said product. Before they were taken down, the UK-based company would have sold unofficial PS5 shells in a variety of colors for $40.
The Australian McDonald’s 50th-anniversary streams have yet to be rescheduled, and there’s no word on what will happen to the PS5 controllers that would have been part of the prize pool.
