PS4 single player gaming at its finest

The Last of Us Part II

When The Last of Us was released on PS3, it blew us away with its story and brutal combat. The Last of Us Part II makes it seem like child’s play now though. This is one of the best games ever made, never mind one of the best single-player games on PS4. Continuing Joel’s and Ellie’s exploits in what is essentially a post apocalyptic world, if you have a PS4, you should consider this a must-have.

“The Last of Us Part II is Naughty Dog’s magnum opus; the result of years spent mastering its craft. It has visuals that defy the generation, audio design that is simply sublime, and a story that is genuinely thought-provoking. It’s more than a game; it’s a work of art. Never before has an interactive experience been so gripping, with combat so dynamic and unpleasantly realised.”

God of War

Some would argue that God of War is the best game on PS4, and they’re probably not wrong. This epic has brutal combat and a story that grips you from the outset and never lets go. Needless to say, if you own a PS4, you simply need to play it. It’s a masterpiece – one of the best single-player games there is. And don’t worry if you’ve never played any of the previous God of War games – you don’t lose much by not having played through Kratos’ sordid history.

“It has been a long time since a game has gripped me like God of War. It’s the type of game that when you sit down to play it, hours pass by in the blink of an eye. It’s the type of game that you can’t put down; you always want to do just one last task. And it’s the type of game that when you aren’t playing it, you’re thinking about playing it. Addictive, engrossing and compelling; it’s epic, that’s what it is. The previous God of War titles were solid action games played out on a grand scale, but this is more. It somehow humanises Kratos and develops his character. It makes you care.”

Resident Evil 2

If you fondly remember the original Resident Evil games, this re-imagining of Resident Evil 2 is an absolute must. It manages to bring the gameplay and visuals bang up-to-date while still retaining some of the old-school charm of the original. It might even be the best Resident Evil game there is. Even better, there are no multiplayer elements whatsoever – just single-player PS4 goodness. Get it bought.

“As remakes go, Resident Evil 2 is masterful. It preserves the spirit of the original game and its gameplay, but enhances it by employing responsive and intuitive controls and introducing new features that make it feel fresh. If you’ve ever played the original Resident Evil 2, you’ll experience a fair bit of déjà vu and revel in moments that have been wonderfully recreated – but you’ll also be kept on your toes with the surprises that are in store. It’s not so much Resident Evil 2 remade, it’s Resident Evil 2 re-imagined. And lord, the graphics; Resident Evil 2 is one of the most beautiful looking games I’ve laid my eyes on.” DOOM Eternal

Okay,so DOOM Eternal does have multiplayer in the form of Battlemode, but its single-player campaign really is the reason to buy it. It’s huge, and there’s so much replayability. If you want more after the campaign is done, there are now two story expansions available too, offering even more fast-paced single-player FPS fun. Be warned that they’re very challenging though. Needless to say, DOOM Eternal is a single-player game at heart, and currently one of the best available on PS4. Richard said: “It isn’t perfect – one or two platforming sections can be a little frustrating, and encounter difficulty varies a lot – but to call DOOM Eternal anything other than phenomenal would be blasphemous. It makes DOOM 2016 feel like a trial run – a warm up to the main event, and that’s what a sequel should do.” Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

There are many, many Assassin’s Creed games available, each and every one of them an enticing prospect. The latest, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, is undoubtedly the best of them all though. Letting you journey back to the age of the Vikings, you’ll take control of Eivor as they live their life trying to settle in England. Though of course, nothing is ever simple, and they’ll soon find themselves caught up in events they could have never imagined. As well as being one of the best single-players games on PS4, Assassin’s Creed Valahalla is also one of the largest – be sure to put aside nearly one hundred hours for this one. Kim said: “Cut from the very best cloth of open world games, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a pleasure from start to finish. Though overwhelming in its early hours, once you settle into Eivor’s shoes, exploring England is an exhilarating journey like no other. Try as you might to focus on the main missions, the lure of exploration is too strong, and you’ll find pleasure in every tiny discovery. Is this the best Assassin’s Creed game yet? That’s difficult to say – but it might just be.”
