PS5 India Scalpers Allegedly Obtain Customer Data from Croma: Report

Amidst the general chaos of PS5 restocks in India, Croma’s handling of the restocks has generally flown under the radar. According to a prospective PS5 buyer on the /r/IndianGaming subreddit, however, an employee of Croma has allegedly leaked customer data to PS5 scalpers.

In a post on the subreddit, Redditor IndianImp writes about how they had hit signed up for updates on PS5 stocks on Croma’s website, but then eventually got a call from a scalper stating that he “heard” that IndianImp was looking to buy a PS5. The scalper reportedly was willing to sell IndianImp the PS5 for Rs. 70,000.

When IndianImp asked the scalper where he got their phone number, the scalper dodged the question. Upon relenting, however, the scalper revealed that he has a friend working at Croma from where he got the phone number.

Aside from the fact that an ‘enterprising’ Croma employee might be trying to profit from the shortages of PS5 stocks in the country, if this is true, it also presents an enormous information security risk. Indian law is quite clear on potential security risks, and the actions of the Croma employee will definitely be brought under a microscope. Quite a few companies have come under fire for leaking customer data in recent times, including pizza franchise Domino’s.

We have reached out to Croma for a statement on the matter, and will update the story accordingly. At the time of publishing, Croma is yet to respond to our request for a statement.

Croma isn’t the first to violate PS5 customers’ privacy, however. Back in November, when the PS5 was originally launched in some international markets, Reliance Digital had run a survey on its website to gauge customer interest in Sony’s new console. The survey, however, failed to properly secure customer data, revealing names, email addresses, and phone numbers exposed for everyone online. According to MediaNama, details for more than 800 people had been leaked by Reliance Digital, since the survey was done through a Google Form without the appropriate security and privacy-protecting measures being taken.

Most recently, the PS5 was available for pre-orders last week. Unfortunately, demand for the console in the country is so high that retailers have been going out of stocks within seconds of opening up pre-orders for the console. Some websites even suffered outages because of the increased traffic from potential customers for PS5 pre-orders. Flipkart has revealed that its own shipments and deliveries have been delayed, but has denied that it is cancelling customers’ orders, despite a few customers revealing evidence of cancelled orders on Flipkart.
