PS5’s Lead Engineer Is Retiring From Sony

Lead PS5 and PS4 engineer Masayasu Ito will leave his role at PlayStation at the end of the month, Sony said Monday. The 60-year-old will switch to a mobility-related assignment at the company, Bloomberg reported Sunday, and Sony confirmed to CNET that he’ll support PlayStation as an adviser until March 2023.

Before working on the PS5, which launched in 2020, Ito worked on the PS3, PS4 and PS4 Pro, along with the PS VR. He’s currently the group’s representative director and executive vice president in Japan, and Lin Tao will step in as representative director and deputy president of PlayStation’s Japan operations.

In June, PS5 sales hit 20 million, while the PS4 in March hit 117.2 million units sold, making it the fourth highest-selling console of all time (the PS2 still holds the top spot, with sales of 155 million).
