First released for PlayStation 4 back in 2018, developer The Voxel Agents is giving its puzzle title The Gardens Between a bit of a facelift with a native PS5 version out on 16th June 2022. There’ll be a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for those who already own it, granting immediate access to PS5 DualSense controller support and improved visuals and frame rates.
The usual adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are both supported in the PS5 version, with the former simulating the passing and rewinding of time as you push on obstacles. Meanwhile, haptic feedback this time is designed to replicate the atmosphere around protagonists Arina and Frendt. “We asked ourselves ‘what sensations would they feel as they navigate the lush gardens?’ The deep rumble of thunder. The ephemeral wisp of light floating into the lantern. The crunch of placing the lantern onto a stone surface,” said director Simon Joslin on the PlayStation Blog.
On PS5, The Gardens Between will run at 60 frames-per-second in a 4K resolution, complete with HDR support and temporal anti-aliasing. “We then unleashed the full texture resolution where it was lacking, enhanced line rendering, increased shadow precision, and perhaps spent an unreasonable amount of time adjusting the water reflection shaders.”
In our The Gardens Between PS4 review, we awarded the game a 7/10 score. “The Gardens Between is almost a truly great puzzle game, but it gets hung up in a couple of small areas. Gorgeous surreal environments pair with a perfect score to create a killer atmosphere for some of the most clever puzzle mechanics – complete with impressively consistent internal logic – that we’ve seen in some time. However, the title’s relative lack of content means it can be polished off quite quickly, even if you’re not in a hurry.”
A PS5 version isn’t going to make the game any longer, but at least your playthrough will look better than ever. Are you interested in playing The Gardens Between on PS5, perhaps for the first time or as a repeated playthrough? Let us know in the comments below.
