Pyra & Mythra’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailer features the only script since Smash 4 that wasn’t written by Masahiro Sakurai

Masahiro Sakurai is known for involving himself in just about every part of a game’s development that he’s been the lead director of. It was actually quite noteworthy when it was reported that Masahiro Sakurai did not get involved with balance decisions of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the first time in the series. He ended up leaving the adjustment of parameters to a team so that he could focus on other aspects of the game’s development.

During the “Mr. Sakurai Presents Pyra/Mythra” video presentation, it was revealed that, with the exception of Pyra & Mythra’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailer, Sakurai himself wrote the script for every trailer since Super Smash Bros. 4.

“On a final note, did you watch the reveal trailer for Pyra and Mythra? This video is a departure from the other reveal videos we’ve created, starting with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U,” stated Sakurai. “Why, you ask? This is the only reveal I didn’t write myself.”

This means that Sakurai created the scripts for the CG trailers for Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina & Luma, Little Mac, Greninja & Charizard, Palutena, Mii fighters, Pac-Man, Robin & Lucina, Shulk, Bowser Jr., Duck Hunt, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin, Bayonetta, Inkling, Ridley, Simon & Richter Belmont, King K. Rool, Isabelle, Incineroar & Ken Masters, Joker, Hero, Banjo-Kazooie, Terry Bogard, Byleth, Min Min, Steve and Sephiroth.

“Our reveals usually start off with me writing a script. After that, we team up with CG and animation studios that help us create the actual movies,” continued Sakurai. “This time, we left the creation of the CG part, including the script, to Monolith Soft.”

When the Pyra & Mythra’s trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate first debuted, some fans may have had the initial impression that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was getting some sort of sequel or expansion DLC. It’s no wonder there was a bit of confusion since the trailer was the handiwork of Monolith Soft.

“I was very impressed by the quality, quantity and polish of the cutscenes in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. For this fighter’s reveal, I felt it would be best to entrust it to Monolith Soft,” said Sakurai. “The end result is deeply connected to the game and encapsulates the depth of the original series. Thank you, Monolith Soft.”

This isn’t to say that Masahiro Sakurai wasn’t involved at all. However, leaving the cinematic part of the trailer to Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s creators meant a much lighter workload for the Super Smash Bros. Director.

“Of course, I reviewed the CG, but my involvement was much lighter than usual. The gameplay part of the video was put together by the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate development team using a script I created,” continued Sakurai. “I also oversaw the creation of the audio track for the reveal. So the process was really the same on our end, aside from the CG.”
