R-Type Final 2 demo deploys for Switch and PS4 in Japan on April 1, 2021

The latest of the side-scrolling shooter series in R-Type Final 2 won’t be released until the end of April, but fans in Japan will get to check out a demo starting April 1, 2021. Developer Granzella shared the news during a live stream today.

The R-Type Final 2 demo will feature the first stage of the game. Since it’s a demo, you won’t be able to change its difficulty, so it’ll be on the easier side. Granzella founder Kazuma Kujo mentioned that the Xbox version of the demo is also in the works. The Xbox demo doesn’t have a release date in Japan, but Granzella aims to launch it when the demo becomes available overseas.

The original R-Type shoot ’em up arcade game was developed by Irem and launched in Japan in July 1987. The last entry from the main series was R-Type Final, released for the PlayStation 2 in July 2003. While Granzella is best known for developing the Disaster Report games, the company was founded by former Irem staff. The current team consists of several original staff, including Kazuma Kujo, on board for the latest installment.

Granzella first announced R-Type Final 2 in April 2019, and it was funded on Kickstarter in June 2019. The company ran a couple more successful crowdfunding campaigns in October 2019 and November 2020 as well.

R-Type Final 2 launches for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC in Japan on April 29, 2021. North America and Europe will get the game on April 30, 2021. Granzella will announce details for the R-Type Final 2 demo on other platforms at a later date.
