It’s wild what people can achieve with a bit of willpower and knowhow. Legendary first-person shooter DOOM has been ported to everything from Casio Calculators to fridge freezers – but even we’re surprised to see it running relatively well in Microsoft Notepad. To be clear, that’s notepad.exe – the exact same program included with your Windows computer.
Obviously there are caveats: the image is constructed using characters, so it’s not the clearest of pictures. And while it’s running at 60 frames-per-second, it does need to refresh at points, resulting in a bit of a flickering effect. But what did you expect? It’s still outputting the image through Microsoft Notepad – truly wild!
It’s especially impressive when you consider that, in 1993 – less than 30 years ago – this was one of the most cutting-edge games on the market. The title was eventually ported to the PS1 in 1995, which was a pretty solid conversion for the time. Nowadays, it’s become a bit of a meme to get DOOM running anywhere and everywhere, but it’s still impressive to see what can be achieved.
