Razer and Verizon are Making a 5G Gaming Handheld

Razer, Verizon and Qualcomm announced today they began making the Razer Edge 5G console.

An announcement of the mobile world Congress in Las Vegas, the new handheld will certainly not be exclusively used for streaming the games in the cloud despite the 5G focus. While Verizon announced that games can also be downloaded to the phone, the handheld will likely not use the handheld to play any games using the platform.

It wasn’t disclosed much more than expected until RazerCon on October 15; but the company did confirm that the device will be built using the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 Gaming Platform and are able to play high-performance games on the go.

Just like @Verizon and @Razer, we’re connecting for the 5G mobile gaming game world. It will allow you to play your favorite games regardless of whether you are playing in the cloud, on an app or on an Xbox 360. http://t.co/type5xFyeFJ/TipCfABl/ https://t.co.en/.aspx/refra/.

Qualcomm and Razer took a handheld gaming prototype back in December, a prowess that seemed to be a precursor to this new console Verizon revealed. It was built by the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 technology, and is accessible to developers but not consumers.

The market for what is basically a handheld gaming device seems to be growing rapidly, as logitech and Chinese publishing giant Tencent announced their own device in August. This console is not intended for cloud gaming, but should be connected to various services such as Xbox’s Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA’s GeForce Now.

The recent surge in handheld gaming was perhaps triggered by the Nintendo Switch’s release in 2017 but more recently with the like of Valve’s Steam Deck – although this device uses the hardware to run demanding games locally instead of streaming them.

Nintendo has dipped its toe into handheld streaming after launching the service in Japan with games such as Resident Evil 7 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Eventually, Nintendo has brought it into the west with a few games such as Control and Kingdom Hearts.
