The high school baseball and softball season began over the weekend. We recap the best from Friday and Saturday’s games.
BASEBALL
Games played on Friday and Saturday
Damien 14, Claremont 3: The Spartans posted three runs in the first and third innings to cruise to an easy season-opening victory over the Wolfpack, Friday. Kaden Moeller had four RBI’s.
South Hills 3, Charter Oak 2, 9 innings: Charter Oak third baseman Anthony Vasquez committed a throwing error on Ethan Lee’s bunt that allowed Anthony Rasmussen to score the winning run in the Pizza Chalet pool play game at South Hills. Matt Lorenzano hurled three and two-thirds shutout innings and earned the victory.
Walnut 3, Crescenta Valley 2, 10 innings: Scotty Ike was hit by a pitch that allowed Ivan Gutierrez to score the winning run in a huge win for the Mustangs Saturday. Kyle Calzadiaz, one of the top pitchers in the east region of the valley, turned in a solid performance allowing one unearned run and two hits in five and one-third innings of work.
Northview 8, Walnut 4: The Vikings scored four runs in the second inning off Mustang’s starter Joseph Russo and easily cruised to a season-opening victory. Dean Curley was the offensive star of the day with a grand slam home run, a double, and collected four RBI’s.
La Mirada 7, Capistrano Valley Christian 4: Sophomore Jeremiah Sotelo connected on a home run and Christian Gutierrez struck out seven to earn the win as the Matadors opened the season with a road win against the Eagles.
Arcadia 7, Alta Loma 1: Brandon Nguyen broke open a competitive game by smacking a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning in a Pizza Chalet tournament game. Daniel Chavez was credited with the win. Harrison Meyers yielded three hits in five innings on the mound in Arcadia’s 8-0 win over California on Friday.
Bonita 9, La Serna 1: JT Fenton contributed two doubles and drove in three runs in the Bearcats opening day win over the Lancers Friday.
St. Paul 4, Long Beach Wilson 3, 10 innings: Castillo’s single to right field scored Salas with the winning run in the top of the tenth inning of a season-opening win Friday. Sean Garcia came in relief to shut down Wilson in the bottom of the tenth inning to earn the save with Xander Orozco being credited with the win.
La Habra 5, Maranatha 1: David Shackelford and Andre Viveros both drove in two runs in the Highlanders win over the Minutemen Friday.
SOFTBALL
Games played Friday and Saturday
Whittier Christian 5, El Toro 0: Pitcher Brooklyn Carreon, a Utah-commit, pitched a perfect game and hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. In the season opener of Friday, Carreon struck out 14 hitters in a 9-0 season-opening win over Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana.
La Mirada 8, South Hills 6, 8 innings : Alyssa Campbell and Josie Dipillo each drove in runs on bunts to give the Matadors a thrilling win over the host Huskies.
Arcadia 10, Temple City 0: In a matchup of two of the top teams in the west region of the valley Friday, the Apaches scored three runs in the first inning and five in the fifth for a season-opening win over the visiting Rams. Morgan Howey and Delaney Prater each contributed two hits. Sophomore Tiara Westbrook pitched four shutout innings and struck out nine Rams to earn the win.
Santa Fe 11, Anaheim Canyon 6: Paris Guzman and Monique Rangel each banged out four hits in the Chief’s win against the Comanches.
St. Paul 3, San Dimas 2: In a matchup of two of the teams in the area, the Swordsmen scored in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and held off a late rally by the Saints. Jordin King, a New Mexico State-signee, yielded two unearned runs and struck out six to earn the win. San Dimas sophomore Kaitlyn Stoffer pitched four solid innings, giving up one run and fanning two.
Glendora 11. Charter Oak 5: Tartans junior Haley Ganino had a huge performance, Friday. She went 3 for 5 with a home run and collected four RBI’s. Ryan Speh and Ashley Waite each banged out doubles.
QUICK HITS
… Glendora’s boys and girls cross-country teams finished in third place at the Palomares League championships that took place Friday at Ayala Park. John Sesteaga (15:30.2) was the best boys performer for the Tartans with a fifth-place effort. Junior Maia Fernando was Glendora’s top girl’s performer with an eighth-place performance.
… South Pasadena High School jumpers Amar Ibrahim (19-feet, 9.50 inches) and Terrance Sweetman (41-1) won the Long and Triple Jump respectively at the Don Green Invitational Track Meet Saturday at Moorpark High. St. Francis’ Dario Rock turned in a lifetime best time of 14.85 seconds to win the 110-meter-high hurdles.
… In a matchup of two of the top area girls water polo teams in the area, Schurr defeated visiting Glendora last week, 11-5. Bianca Becerra led the way for the Spartans with five goals.
… Monrovia defeated Schurr, 3-2, to win the San Gabriel Valley Girls Volleyball League championship, Friday.
