Red Dead Redemption’s Surprise Removal From PS Plus Is Causing Alarm

The original Red Dead Redemption has been removed from PlayStation Plus, leaving PS-only players with no way to play Rockstar’s classic Western title.

The original Red Dead Redemption has been removed from PlayStation Plus, which is alarming fans who are now unable to play the game on the PlayStation 4 or PS5. Released in 2010, Rockstar’s Western epic wowed players with its sweeping open-world landscape and moving tale of Red Dead Redemption protagonist John Marston, a former member of the ruthless Van der Linde gang who is forced to hunt down his former associates when the government kidnaps his family. Red Dead Redemption received near-universal acclaim when it first launched, and would spawn an even more successful sequel in 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2.

Even over 10 years after Red Dead Redemption hit PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, fans are itching for the chance to relive John Marston’s journey across the American West in the year 1911. There have been rumors of Rockstar working on a Red Dead Redemption remaster for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with Marston’s original voice actor Rob Weithoff expressing his support for such a project. However, it was later reported that the Red Dead Redemption remaster had been canceled due to Rockstar’s commitments to the recently announced Grand Theft Auto 6 and the poor reception of last year’s Grand Theft Auto Trilogy -The Definitive Edition. To make matters worse, it looks like fans won’t be able to play the original Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation’s streaming services either – thus cutting off the only option many have to experience this classic game.

Twitter user videotech_ recently reported that Red Dead Redemption was removed from PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now earlier this week (via PushSquare), roughly six years after it was first added in 2016. This has left PlayStation owners without any means to replay Red Dead Redemption if they don’t still have a working PS3, as the game is currently only available to play on Xbox consoles and PC emulators.

PlayStation 5 & PS4 Owners Can No Longer Replay Red Dead Redemption

Backward compatibility has always been a topic of debate in the gaming community, as while the Xbox Series X/S allows for backward compatibility across all previous Xbox generations, the PlayStation 5 only supports PS4 disks. Sony has been looking to remedy this perceived shortcoming by adding a new catalog of classic games to its revamped PlayStation Plus premium service, but this is still limited to a select lineup of games from the PS3, PS2, PS1, and PSP eras, and is powered through streaming, excluding those on weaker internet connections.

Preserving classic video games is an important subject to many gamers, especially titles as beloved and impactful as the original Red Dead Redemption. With Red Dead Redemption now removed from PlayStation Plus and no current-gen Red Ded Redemption remaster in sight from Rockstar, it seems that PlayStation owners who tossed out their old PS3 consoles have no way to replay Rockstar’s seminal open-world Western epic unless they also own an Xbox system or are willing to emulate it on PC. Hopefully, Sony finds some way to bring the original Red Dead Redemption back to the PS4 and PS5 soon, as many still want this legendary title preserved for future gaming generations.
