We were getting excited from the prospect of PGA Tour 2K22 after 2K announced the signing of Tiger Woods.
Well, EA has responded in epic fashion by bringing back its PGA Tour series.
Believed to be called “EA Sports PGA Tour” – this is everything we know so far.
Release Date
We don’t have a release date as of yet for EA Sports PGA Tour.
The last game in the series, Rory McIlory PGA Tour, arrived on 14 July 2015 – so a release this summer is not out of question.
As for 2K’s title last year, PGA Tour 2K21 arrived on 21 August 2020, teeing off sports game season.
The initial release from EA and the PGA Tour on 29 March read: “More EA SPORTS PGA TOUR news will be revealed in the coming weeks and a launch date will be announced in the coming months.”
Last year’s delayed Ryder Cup takes place on 24-26 September 2021 – perhaps EA will target the epic tournament as a release window for the upcoming game.
Platforms
That initial release kicked off with: “EA announced EA SPORTS PGA TOUR, a new next-gen golf video game, currently in development.”
That essentially confirms the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it would be very surprising for the title to not arrive on PS4 and Xbox One.
It remains to be seen whether the title will arrive on PC, Nintendo Switch and Stadia.
Cover Star
We may have already seen the cover for EA Sports PGA Tour – with the Masters Tournament featuring.
Whether a current or legendary golfer will also appear remains to be seen.
One person we know it won’t be is Tiger Woods who has secured an exclusive deal with 2K Sports.
Sticking with the Ryder Cup theme, we could see legends like Jack Nicklaus or Seve Ballesteros, with EA often keen on legendary editions for its sports titles.
Out of current pros, Rory McIlory will be the favourite – picking up from where he left off in 2015.
Dustin Johnson is the current world number 1, with Jon Rahm and PGA Tour 2K21 cover star Justin Thomas other contenders.
Trailer
We’ve had the announcement, a potential cover – perhaps a trailer, or at least a teaser is next?
We will update this page as soon as we get a sniff of one, with perhaps an early peak coming any time from May.
For comparison, here’s last year’s PGA Tour 2K21 trailer:
Courses and Tournaments
The four majors are already confirmed exclusively for EA Sports PGA Tour.
These are:
- The Masters Tournament at Augusta National (April)
- PGA Championship (Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, South Carolina in May 2021)
- US Open (Torrey Pines in San Diego, California in June 2021)
- The Open Championship (Royal St George’s in Sandwich, England in July 2021)
Other courses tournaments that have already been confirmed are:
- The Players Championship at Sawgrass, Florida
- The FedEx Cup Playoffs (The Northern Trust, BMW Championship and Tour Championship)
- Pebble Beach Golf Links
With almost all the big tournaments signed on the only biggie remaining is the Ryder Cup – it has featured in the series before and we would love to see the Europe vs USA battle feature this year.
Features & Game Modes
Similar to PGA Tour 2K21, “In EA Sports PGA Tour, golf fans will be able to build their virtual career and experience the sights, sounds, and thrills of the PGA TOUR”.
Career Mode is the staple of any golf title, so it will be interesting to see how EA take this to new heights, with any sort of Story Mode incorporation likely to be a hit with fans – which has been seen in UFC 4.
An online mode is almost inevitable, and in terms of the game’s make-up: “The game will be built on the EA Frostbite engine and leveraging next-gen technology, promises stunning fidelity, breathtaking immersive environments, and approachable, dynamic gameplay.”
